Game Recap: Volleyball |
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa native Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon) had a team-best 11 kills in the final match of her career in her home state and also added two blocks, but Northern Iowa hit .302 as a team to top Bradley 25-11, 25-19, 25-17 Saturday night in Missouri Valley Conference volleyball action at the McLeod Center.

After a team-best 17 kills Friday at Drake, Cave reached double figures in kills for the fourth time in the last seven outings with a team-best 11 kills Saturday at Northern Iowa.  She attacked at .346 clip and also added two blocks in the setback.  Sophomore Abby Ihrke (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was one of three Braves in double figures in digs with a team-best 17.

Northern Iowa hit .469 in the first set and collected three blocks as the Panthers took the opener 25-11.  UNI used a 7-0 run midway through the set to build a 17-6 lead and scored the final six points of the frame en route to the 25-11 victory.

Cave and sophomore Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) each had five kills in the second set.  Northern Iowa's Amie Held had nine kills of her own in the frame, however, to help power the Panthers to a 25-19 win.

In the third set, Bradley trailed by as many as seven points  before battling back to pull within four at 20-16.  Cave had two kills and Haslag capped the Bradley spurt with a block.  Northern Iowa answered with consecutive points to go in front 22-16 and Held, who had five kills in the third set, later closed out a 25-17 UNI victory with an ace and kill.

Haslag became the fifth player in program history to reach 600 career kills before the end of their sophomore season with her seven-kill effort.   Cave finished with a team-best 11 kills and her two blocks pushed her season total to 72 for the most by a Brave since 2012.

Held led Northern Iowa with 15 kills and 13 digs, while UNI setter Heather Hook added six kills, 36 assists and seven digs.

Bradley will close out the 2016 season next Saturday with a 5 p.m. home match against Loyola at Renaissance Coliseum.
