Braves Fall To Indiana State In Valley Opener

Share:
Game Recap: Volleyball |
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Despite a season-high 21 kills from sophomore Erica Haslag (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias Catholic) and a career-best 19 kills with no errors by senior Kelsey Cave (Solon, Iowa/Solon), Bradley fell 25-20, 27-29, 21-25, 26-28 Friday at Indiana State in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Haslag turned in her third double-double of the year with 21 kills and 10 digs in addition to collecting three block solos.  Cave had her third outing of the year with 10 or more kills without a hitting error, tallying a career-best 19 kills with no errors on 28 attacks for a .679 hitting percentage.  Her 19 kills broke the previous Bradley mark of kills in a match without an error (13) she had tied earlier this season.

Bradley (5-6 overall, 0-1 MVC) hit a blistering .424 in the first set with Haslag pacing the way with seven of her 21 kills.  Consecutive Indiana State attack errors broke an 18-18 tie and Cave gave the Braves a 21-19 edge with her fourth kill of the frame.  Haslag sandwiched a pair of kills around one by Bradley setter Erin Olson (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) as the Braves held set point (24-19).  Haslag's seventh kill of the set closed out a 25-20 Bradley win.

The second set featured 17 ties and five lead changes, before Indiana State (6-5 overall, 1-0 MVC) was able to even the match with a 29-27 victory.  Bradley had set point at 25-24 on a block by Rachel Jones (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and again at 26-25 when sophomore Allison Turner (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) found the floor with a kill.

Cave was a perfect 8-for-8 on attack attempts in the second set and tied the score at 27-27 with her final kill of the stanza.  Indiana State's Bree Spangler, who finished with 20 kills and 20 digs on the night, closed out the win for the Sycamores with back-to-back kills of her own, however.

In the third set, Bradley boasted a .344 attack percentage, but Indiana State answered with an even more impressive .433 hitting percentage of its own.  Indiana State led for most of the third set held a 22-20 edge after Cave's fourth kill of the set.  A Melody Burdette kill and Bradley error gave the Sycamores set point at 24-20 and Sarah Peterson later capped a 25-21 Indiana State win with a kill.

The fourth set was another back and forth battle.  Bradley took a 21-20 lead on a kill by Jones, who had a season-high eight, and the Braves eventually held set point at 24-23 after an Indiana State service error.  The Sycamores answered with two more points to go in front 25-24.  Haslag's 21st kill of the night knotted the score at 26-26, but Indiana State answered with back-to-back kills by Kynedi Nalls and Peterson as the Sycamores took the set 28-26 to win the match in four.

Sophomore Abby Ihrke (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) led Bradley defensively with a career-best 27 digs.  Bradley hit .310 as a team compared to .304 for Indiana State.

The Braves play Western Michigan in the final non-conference match of the year Saturday at 10 a.m. in Terre Haute, Ind.
