Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Jamie Livaudais had a match-high 10 kills to lead Bradley, but Missouri Valley Conference newcomer Valparaiso collected 64 digs and 10 blocks as the Crusaders topped the Braves 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

Both teams entered Friday's contest among the top 10 in the nation in digs per set, with Valparaiso (9-8 overall, 2-3 MVC) owning the top average in the country and Bradley (7-13 overall, 0-6 MVC) ranking eighth.  The Crusaders posted a 64-56 advantage in digs and limited the Braves to .095 hitting as Valparaiso swept the first meeting between the programs as conference foes.

Livaudais had a team-high 10 kills off the bench and junior Hannah Alexander tallied her second career double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs in the start.

Valparaiso took an early lead in the opening set, but Bradley was able to battle back from a 19-12 deficit to pull within two points at 20-18.  Junior Erica Haslag had all three of her first-set kills during the 6-1 run by the Braves.  Valpo answered with five consecutive points to take the opening set 25-18.  Katherine Carlson sandwiched a kills around two Rylee Cookerly aces and a Bradley error to highlight the spurt for the Crusaders.

In the second set, Bradley found itself in an early hole at 5-0 and Valparaiso held a two-sets-to-none lead after a 25-17 victory.  The Crusaders notched 26 digs in the second-set win.

Trailing 12-9 in the third set the Braves grabbed their only lead of the night with a 5-0 run to go in front 14-12.  Livaudais sparked Bradley with a kill and junior Alissa Schovanec added a kill and block of her own.  With Valparaiso leading 20-19, Haslag tied the set for the eighth time with a kill to knot things up at 20-20.  Back-to-back Bradley errors and Valpo's fourth block of the set broke the tie, however, and gave the Crusaders a 23-20 advantage.  The Braves fought off a Valpo match point to pull within two at 24-22 on another Haslag kill, but Taylor Graboski found the floor with her fifth kills of the frame to cap a 25-22 Crusader victory.

Bradley closes out a brief two-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against Loyola.  Head coach Carol Price-Torok will give a pre-game Chalk Talk open to all fans in the Zobrist Room at 6:30 p.m.
