Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Kathryn Graf had a career-high 18 kills to go with three aces and seven blocks, while junior Erica Haslag turned in her sixth 20-kill outing of the year (23 kills) to help Bradley rally for a 24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-12 victory over Loyola Saturday at Renaissance Coliseum.

The Braves (8-13 overall, 1-6 MVC) snapped a five-match losing skid in five-set contests and rallied to win a match after dropping the first two sets for the first time since a five-set victory against Southern Illinois on Sept. 17, 2011.

Graf hit a blistering .500 in the match as she tallied a career-best 18 kills with two errors on 32 attacks in addition to serving up a career-high three aces to help highlight the victory.  Haslag, who passed her season kill total from 2016, paced four Bradley players in double figures with 23 kills as she notched her 11th double-double of the year.

Senior Jamie Livaudais (12 kills) and freshman Ezri Edwards (11 kills) joined the duo in double figures in kills, while sophomore setter Hannah Angeli had her team-best 14th double-double of the season with 56 assists and 13 digs.  Bradley owned a commanding 88-70 advantage in digs thanks in part to juniors Yavianliz Rosado (28 digs) and Abby Ihrke (18 digs).

Bradley led for most of the first set and held set point at 24-21, before Loyola rattled off five consecutive points to take the opener 26-24.  The Braves held a 22-21 edge in the second set and the score was later tied at 23-23.  Loyola (1-16 overall, 0-6 MVC) got back-to-back kills by Quinn Spieker, however, to claim the second set 25-23.

Consecutive Loyola attack errors to open the third set gave Bradley an early 2-0 lead and the Braves jumped out to a 4-1 advantage.  Bradley never trailed in the set, breaking open a 14-13 contest with five consecutive points to build a 19-13 lead.  Livaudais had a block and kill, while Graf added two blocks to highlight the 5-0 BU spurt.  With the Braves leading 20-17, Graf sandwiched a pair of kills around an Edwards kill to make it a six-point cushion at 23-17.  Bradley went on to win the third set 25-20, behind five Haslag kills in the frame.  The Braves hit .471 in the third with 17 kills and just one attack error.

Loyola hit .324 in the fourth set and led by as many five points before Bradley would rally.  The Braves chipped away at the Rambler lead to tie things up at 18-18 on a Haslag ace and went in front 20-18 on kills by Alissa Schovanec and Livaudais.  Haslag's sixth kill of the fourth later gave Bradley a 23-20 advantage and a Graf kill handed the Braves set point at 24-20.  Livaudais, who also had six kills in the fourth, followed a Loyola kill with one of her own to cap a 25-21 BU win as the Braves forced a deciding fifth set.

In the fifth, Bradley took an 8-6 lead on a Loyola service error and attack error, but the Ramblers regrouped to pull even again at 9-9.  Schovanec broke the tie with a kill and a 3-0 run by the Braves included a Loyola error and Livaudais kill to put Bradley ahead 12-9.  The teams traded points back and forth with Bradley eventually grabbing match point at 14-11 on Loyola's fifth hitting error of the stanza.  Elle Van Grinsven cut Bradley's lead to 14-12 with a kill, but Haslag answered with one of her own to seal the 15-12 victory for the Braves.

After collecting eight kills with a .100 hitting percentage in the first two sets, Haslag notched 15 kills on .306 hitting in the final three frames.  Graf did not have a hitting error in the final three sets as she tallied nine kills on 16 swings in the three sets the Braves won.

The victory gave Bradley eight wins in a season for the first time since 2013 and the Braves are now 6-6 at home for the team's most home victories since that same 2013 campaign.

Bradley opens a four-match road swing Monday with a 7 p.m. match at Evansville.
