Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Erica Haslag collected a match-high 18 kills and also added 15 digs, while sophomore Hannah Angeli turned in a double-double of her own, but Indiana State managed to edge Bradley 25-22, 25-21, 33-31 Saturday night at Renaissance Coliseum in the final match of the 2017 season for the Braves.

After tallying 20 kills in just three sets to highlight Friday's sweep of Evansville, Haslag notched 18 kills while hitting .314 and added 15 digs for her 18th double-double of the season Saturday against the Sycamores.  Angeli posted her 22nd double-double of the year, which tied for the second best season total in school history, as she finished the night with 38 assists and 17 digs.

Indiana State got off to a hot start, hitting .395 in the opening set.  Despite the efficient hitting percentage, the Sycamores had to hold off a late Bradley surge.  The Braves trailed 23-17 when Haslag opened a 5-1 BU spurt with a kill.  Angeli added one of her own and senior Taylor Thiele found the floor with her only kill of the night to pull Bradley within three at 23-20.  Indiana State held set point (24-21), but a Sycamore service error and Yavianliz Rosado ace cut the deficit two at 24-22.  Indiana State was able to close out a 25-22 win on a Sarah Peterson kill, however.  Haslag turned in five first-set kills while the duo of Jamie Livaudais and Ezri Edwards each adding three kills of their own during the opener

Much like the first set, Bradley had to battle back after falling behind by as many six points (17-11) in the second.  Livaudais had a kill out of a timeout to open a 3-0 spurt by the Braves and another 3-0 run later on cut the Indiana State advantage to two at 19-17.  Bradley eventually pulled within a point at 20-19 on an Edwards kill and Sycamore attack error.  Indiana State answered with three straight points, however and went on to take the frame 25-21.

The third set went back and forth with neither team leading by more than three at any point in the period.  The contest featured 24 ties and 13 lead changes before Indiana State was able to pull out a 33-31 in the longest set for the Braves since August of 2012.

Indiana State was the first team to have set point at 24-23 on a Petersen kill, but a Sycamore attack error and Livaudais kill gave Bradley the first of its eventual five set points at 25-24.  An Edwards kill later gave the Braves a 26-25 set point and Haslag, who had nine kills in the third, handed Bradley another chance to close out the set at 27-26 with a kill only to have Indiana State answer.

Haslag helped the Braves hold off Indiana State points at 27-28 and 28-29 with two more kills and Livaudais, who finished with 11 kills on the night, gave BU its fourth set point of the stanza at 30-29 with a kill.  Livaudais followed up an Indiana State kill which tied the contest at 30-30 with another kill as Bradley led 31-30.  Indiana State's Cassie Kawa was able to tie things up at 31-31 with her 10th kill of the evening and Laura Gross gave the Sycamores match point at 32-31 with her seventh kill of the third set.  A Bradley attack on the next point was long as Indiana State sealed the match with the 33-31 win.

Livaudais finished with 11 kills in the final match of her career to move into 23rd in career kills at Bradley (821) as she passed Megan Schmidt on BU's all-time kills list.  Thiele had a kill and nine digs in her final match as a Brave.

Haslag's match-high 18 kills pushed her final season kill total to 530, which ranks second among Bradley season marks behind Lindsay Stalzer's Missouri Valley Conference season record 720 kills in 2005.  Edwards provided a big boost off the bench with nine kills and no errors on 26 attacks for a .346 hitting percentage.

Gross led Indiana State with 14 kills and a match-high 19 digs to pace four Sycamores in double figures in kills.
