Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Bradley scored the first four points of the game as part of a 12-2 opening run and never looked back as the Braves never trailed in a 75-65 victory over Nicholls State Friday afternoon in the first game of the 2017 Southeast Missouri State Thanksgiving Classic at the Show Me Center.

Junior Shunseere Kent turned in her first career double-double, collecting 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals to pace two Bradley (3-1 overall) players in double figures.  Twelve of 13 players that saw action for the Braves scored as the BU bench combined for 35 points in the victory.

"I thought we handled their second-half runs well, a lot better than we did last time out against Illinois," said Bradley head coach Andrea Gorski.  "Overall it was a good team effort.  We shared the ball well and got off to a hot start after a couple changes to the starting lineup.  It was a game of runs and I'm just glad we had bigger runs and a lot more of them."

Bradley, which is 3-1 to start a season for the first time since 2011-12, forced five turnovers in the first 4:17 of the contest and quickly took a 12-2 lead as four different Braves found the bottom of the net during the opening spurt.  Nicholls State (1-4 overall) ended up committing seven turnovers in the opening 10 minutes as the Braves owned a 24-12 advantage at the end of the first period.

In the second quarter, a cold start from the field by Bradley (1-for-7) allowed Nicholls State to get as close as seven points (25-18).  The Braves took over down the stretch, making 5-of-7 from the field to close the period, including each of their last four shots.  The hot shooting helped Bradley end the second with a 12-4 spurt which gave the Braves a 39-24 lead at the break.

Nicholls State opened the third quarter with back-to-back three's, but a Danielle Brewer three on the next trip down the floor was the first points of the frame for the Braves and opened a stretch in which Bradley made three of its first five shots from the field.  Nicholls State took advantage of six BU turnovers during that same span, however, to once again pull within seven points (47-40) just over five minutes into the third.

Vanessa Markert hit a turnaround in the lane and senior Anneke Schlueter followed a Gabi Haack three-pointer with a hoop of her own as Bradley quickly pushed the advantage to 14 points (55-40) with just over two minutes left in the third.  The Braves took a 58-44 lead into the fourth and were able to extend the advantage to as many 18 points (64-46) closing in on the five-minute mark in the final stanza.

Bradley went on to earn its first regular-season neutral site victory since 2013-14 with a 75-65 win over the Colonels.  The Braves shot 48 percent from the field and made 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) three-point attempts.  BU's newcomers combined for 39 points, 23 rebounds, 11 assists, three blocks and three steals.

Bradley closes out the Southeast Missouri State Thanksgiving Classic Saturday with a 3:15 p.m. contest against tournament-host SEMO at the Show Me Center.
