CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After falling behind by as many as 17 points, Bradley came back to take a late lead on an Anneke Schlueter three-pointer with three minutes to play only to have Southeast Missouri State pull out a 57-53 victory over the Braves Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the SEMO Thanksgiving Classic.
First-half turnovers and cold shooting by Bradley (3-2 overall) helped Southeast Missouri State (4-3 overall) build a 27-10 lead with three and a half minutes left in the first half. Junior Vanessa Markert, who had team highs of 17 points and eight rebounds, helped fuel the second-half rally by the Braves with 13 points and five boards in the final two quarters.
Bradley struggled offensively in the first half, shooting 26.7 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Braves ended the second quarter with a bit of push by connecting on 4-of-7 shots over the final 3:20 after opening the game 4-for-23. Thirteen BU first-half turnovers, which included nine in the second quarter, helped Southeast Missouri State to 11 points off turnovers in the first half of play.
Sophomore Chelsea Brackmann scored Bradley's first seven points of the contest, but a near six-minute first-quarter scoring drought for the Braves was part of a 21-5 scoring run by SEMO which lasted until back-to-back baskets by Markert nearing the three-minute mark of the second quarter started the late BU spurt in the second.
Bradley trimmed the deficit to 12 points (30-18) at the half despite shooting 26.7 percent from the floor and committing 13 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
While Bradley didn't improve much on its shooting in the third quarter, making 4-of-15 field goal attempts, the Braves made 11 trips to the free throw line. Defensively, BU forced nine third-quarter turnovers by SEMO and limited the Redhawks to three field goals on only seven attempts in the frame. Bradley pulled within two points at 34-32 on a free throw by Markert with 1:22 left in the third.
After SEMO scored the first two points of the second half, Markert scored eight of her team-best 17 points to highlight a 14-2 Bradley run which cut the deficit to two points (34-32) with 1:21 to play in the third.
Southeast Missouri State answered with four straight points to extend the lead back to six in the final minute of the third period and the Redhawks held a 46-38 advantage with just under six minutes to play in the fourth.
Markert hit a jumper at the 5:40 mark to open a 13-1 run by the Braves which put Bradley in front 49-47. After the teams traded free throws, senior Danielle Brewer followed a steal at midcourt with a three-point play to cut the deficit to three (47-44) with 4:37 left. Markert followed a defensive stop with a jumper from the elbow to make it a one-point contest and Schlueter's three-pointer with just under three minutes on the clock gave Bradley its first lead of the contest at 49-47.
SEMO tied it with a pair of free throws on the next trip down the floor and the Redhawks ended a near five-minute stretch without a field goal closing on two minutes left with a three-pointer by Ashton Luttrull to go back in front 52-49.
Schlueter cut the deficit to one (52-51) with a pair of free throws and a Brewer hoop following a SEMO turnover put Bradley ahead again 53-52 with 1:40 to play.
The lead was short-lived, however, as a driving layup by Tesia Thompson gave SEMO a 54-53 lead. Bradley failed to score on its final three possessions of the contest and Southeast Missouri State made 3-of-4 free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds to hold on for the 57-53 victory.
Brackmann joined Markert in double figures for the Braves with 11 points in just 13 minutes before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Bradley had just four turnovers in the second half and had a strong finish offensively, making 7-of-15 shots from the field (46.7 percent) over the final 10 minutes.
Bradley closes out a four-game road swing Wednesday with a 6 p.m. game at Northern Illinois.
