Game Recap: Volleyball |
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Bradley came up short in its final road match of 2017, dropping a 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 decision to Missouri Valley Conference newcomer Valparaiso Saturday.  Sophomore Hannah Angeli turned in her team-best 20th double-double of the year in the setback to lead the Braves.

Angeli is the first Brave with 20 double-doubles in a season since Sam Hardwick in 2001, collecting 20 assists and 10 digs in the loss to the Crusaders.  Junior Erica Haslag nearly notched her 16th double-double of the season as she finished with a team-best nine kills to go with nine digs.  Freshman Michaela Hoffa added eight kills in her first outing since Oct. 20 and just her second match in the last month.

Bradley (9-20 overall, 2-13 MVC) held a 7-5 lead in the first set, but five straight errors started an 8-0 Valpo run which gave the Crusaders a 13-7 edge.  The Braves later pulled within four at 19-15 on back-to-back Haslag kills.  Valparaiso (15-13 overall, 6-8 MVC) answered with back-to-back kills of its own to push the advantage back to six and Bradley got no closer than five points down the stretch as the Crusaders took the opener 25-17.  Angeli had seven of her 10 digs in the opening set.

After Valparaiso jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the second set, Angeli helped Bradley pull back into the contest.  She served up consecutive aces and also had an assist to help the Braves cut the deficit to four at 17-13.  The Crusaders hit .519 in the second set, however, and went on to win the frame 25-17.

The third set was close midway through with one of Haslag's four third-set kills putting Bradley within one point at 11-10.  Valparaiso rattled off three straight points to push the lead back to four at 14-10.  Hoffa, who also had four kills in the third, had a kill to make it a two-point deficit for the Braves (15-13).  Katherine Carlson had a pair of kills for the Crusaders during a 4-0 Valpo spurt which pushed the lead to 19-13.  Bradley fell 25-16 in the third set to close the match.

Junior Yavianliz Rosado notched a match-high 12 digs, putting her season dig total of 589 just 18 digs from breaking the Bradley season digs record.

The Braves will close out the 2017 regular-season schedule with a three-match home stand, opening the stretch next Saturday with a 7 p.m. contest against I-74 rival Illinois State at Renaissance Coliseum.
