Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Sophomore Vanessa Markert (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) scored a game-high 16 points off the bench and senior Leti Lerma (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) added 12 rebounds, but Bradley's three-game win streak came to an end with a 70-50 loss to Northern Iowa Friday at the McLeod Center.

Northern Iowa (17-6 overall, 10-2 MVC) connected on eight three-pointers and made 26 trips to the free throw line to top the Braves.

UNI's Madison Weekly scored eight consecutive points during a 10-0 first quarter run which gave the Panthers an early 14-2 lead.  Bradley (9-14 overall, 5-7 MVC) trailed 20-6 at the end of the opening quarter and the deficit was 35-21 at the half.

Trailing 53-39 to start the fourth, Bradley tried to rally early in the closing period.  Freshman Chelsea Brackmann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) opened the scoring with a put-back basket and fellow freshman Alona Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) followed a UNI three-pointer with a driving layup.  After a defensive stop, Johnson found Lerma for a layup to pull Bradley within 10 at 55-45 with over eight minutes to play.

The Braves still faced a 10-point deficit at 57-47 with 5:43 to play, but Bradley went a seven-minute stretch without a field goal before a Markert hoop with 1:20 left ended the drought from the field.  UNI took advantage of Bradley's struggles outscoring the Braves 13-3 over the final five-and-a-half minutes to close out the 70-50 victory.

"We couldn't get that big bucket to get it under 10 down the stretch," said Bradley head coach Andrea Gorski.  "We missed some inside shots and just weren't able to make some open looks.  They are a physical team and they came out early and set the tone tonight."

Markert was the only Bradley player in double figures with her game-high 16 points off the bench.  Lerma reached double figures in rebounds for the 14th time this season, snagging 12 boards.

Weekly and Ellie Herzberg paced Northern Iowa offensively with 15 points each.  Weekly, who added five assists and three steals, was one of six Panthers to hit a three-pointer.  In addition, nine different UNI players made a free throw and helped the team make 22-of-26 from the charity stripe.  The Panthers forced 17 Bradley turnovers and held a 22-7 edge in points off the Bradley miscues in addition to holding the Braves to 30.4 percent shooting.

Bradley closes out a two-game road swing Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at league-leading Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
