Game Recap: Softball |
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior Kelly Kapp had multiple hits in her third consecutive game, going 2-for-3 Saturday night against 14th-ranked Tennessee; but the Volunteers topped the Braves 8-0 in five innings to conclude day two at the Troy Cox Classic.

Kapp had two of Bradley's three hits in the contest as Tennessee snapped a three-game win streak for the Braves with the win in the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams in 2017.

Tennessee (7-0 overall) threatened in the first inning, leaving two runners in scoring position and left another runner on base in the second.

Bradley (4-5 overall) had the leadoff runner reach base on a Tennessee error to open the third and left two runners on after a two-out Kapp single.

The Volunteers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.  Aubrey Leach had a bunt single to open the inning and Jenna Holcomb followed with a single.  Tennessee plated the first run of the contest with a double steal and the Volunteers had a 2-0 lead after Brooke Vines drove in a run with a RBI single.  Another run came home on a Megan Greer double and an illegal pitch pushed another across as Tennessee grabbed a 4-0 lead after three innings of play.

The Braves drew back-to-back walks to open the fourth, but were unable to push a run across and Tennessee answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame.  Leach led off the inning with single and stole second.  She scored the first run of the inning on a single by Vines.  A single off the bat of Meghan Gregg pushed the Tennessee lead to 6-0 and a Bradley error led to another run.  The second illegal pitch of the game gave the Volunteers an 8-0 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, freshman Brooklyn Bane had a one-out infield single and Bradley had runners at first and third with only one out after Kapp's second hit of the game, but Tennessee turned a double play to end the inning and close out the 8-0 victory.

Bradley closes out play at the Troy Cox Classic Sunday with a 10 a.m. (CST) game against DePaul.
