W: Hull, Jaelen (5-1)
L: Stewart, Alex (4-2)
LAFAYETTE, La. – Three Bradley pitchers combined to hold 16
th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette to just one hit and junior
Maria Schroeder hit a 2-run homer off ULL All-American hurler Alex Stewart to power the Braves to a 2-1 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns Sunday to conclude the Mardi Gras Classic.
Bradley (9-6 overall) picked up its fifth consecutive victory and earned its first win against a top-25 team since a 2-1 win over 13
th-ranked Arizona in Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 8, 2013.
Louisiana-Lafayette (10-4 overall) entered the game averaging seven runs per game, but Bradley pitchers held the Cajuns hitless until a two-out single in the sixth. The Braves got out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth after walking the bases loaded and faced a similar situation in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, senior
Jaelen Hull got a strikeout for the second out of the sixth. A run-scoring single by Kelli Martizez broke up the Bradley no-hit bid and gave the Cajuns a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Kelly Kapp led off the Bradley half of the sixth with her second hit of the day and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Schroeder ripped a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left for her second homer of the season as the Braves went in front 2-1.
Louisiana-Lafayette tried to rally in the top of the seventh drawing a pair of one out walks. Hull got a foul-out down the third base line for the second out of the inning, but the Cajuns had runners at second and third after a wild pitch. Battling back from a 2-0 count, Hull struck out Beth Ashley to close out the game.
Freshman
Emily Visnic made the start for Bradley and held ULL hitless for the first 4.2 innings as she kept the Cajuns off the scoreboard despite issuing six walks. Sophomore
Julie Kestas tossed one-third of an inning out of the bullpen and Hull picked up the victory in relief, giving up one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings to improve to 5-1 on the year.
Bradley will open play at the Tennessee Invitational Friday with a 1:30 p.m. game against Ohio in Knoxville, Tenn.
