PEORIA, Ill. -- Incoming Bradley Women's Golf freshman Maddie Hawkins (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) started off summer competition on a strong note by claiming the Iowa Girl's High School Athletic Union Class 5A individual title in late May. In addition to her state title, Hawkins was named the Des Moines Register Golfer of the Year Saturday at the newspaper's annual Sports Awards ceremony.
A three-time all-state performer, Hawkins capped her prep career by finishing at one-under 141 to win medalist honors at the IGHSAU Class 5A State Championship, while helping her team to a third-place finish. After an opening-round two-over 74 at the par-72 Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa, she came back the next day to fire a four-under 67 and take top individual honors by four strokes.
The 36-hole 141 matched the fourth-best score in state meet history as she placed in the top 13 in the state of Iowa in each of her four prep seasons.
Hawkins is the lone newcomer for the Braves in 2017-18, joining a squad which returns all 10 letterwinners from a team which finished third at the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
