Game Recap: Volleyball |
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sophomore transfer Hannah Angeli had game highs of 35 assists and 13 digs for her fourth double-double in as many contests to help lead Bradley Volleyball to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 victory over IPFW Friday morning in the opening match of the Ball State Tournament.

Angeli is the first Brave to collect four double-doubles in their first four appearances of a season since Kathy Vaitkus in 1987, helping direct Bradley (2-2 overall) to a convincing sweep of the Mastodons (3-2 overall).   Junior Erica Haslag turned in her second straight double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs while attacking at a .444 clip and fellow junior Alissa Schovanec added a season-high 10 kills, hitting .562 as the pair combined for 28 of Bradley's 44 kills.

Haslag powered Bradley in the opening set, collecting eight kills on 15 swings with just one error (.467 attack percentage) along with seven digs in the first frame.  With the Braves trailing IPFW 17-15, Schovanec had back-to-back kills and Haslag followed with one of her own to put Bradley in front 18-17.  Sophomore Kathryn Graf broke a 20-20 tie with a block and later gave the Braves a 23-20 lead with her only kill of the set.  An Angeli ace gave Bradley set point at 24-20 and Haslag closed out a 25-20 victory with her eighth kill of the stanza.

The Braves hit a blistering .382 in the second set, committing just one attack error.  Schovanec, who had five kills on six attacks (.833 attack percentage) in the second, highlighted an early 7-1 Bradley run with a pair of kills and a block to give the Braves a 12-5 advantage.  IPFW got no closer than five points down the stretch as Bradley finished off the 25-17 win with a 3-0 spurt, which included kills from Haslag, Graf and senior Jamie Livaudais.

Haslag had three of the first five points of the third set, helping Bradley jump out to a 5-1 lead.  The Braves built an eight-point cushion (20-12) on another Haslag kill, but IPFW later countered with six consecutive points to pull within two at 21-19.  Schovanec and Livaudais combined for Bradley's eighth block of the match after a Mastodon attack error to stop the IPFW run.  Another IPFW error gave the Braves match point at 24-19 and Schovanec put the finishing touches on the sweep with a kill to cap a 25-19 BU win.

Bradley hit a season-best .294 in the victory, while limiting IPFW to a .157 attack percentage.  Schovanec and Haslag combined to hit .481 (28 kills - 3 errors - 52 attacks) to pace the Braves offensively.

Bradley continues play at the Ball State Tournament tonight with a 6:30 p.m. (CDT) contest against tournament-host Ball State.  The match with the Cardinals will be available on ESPN3.
