EVANSVILLE, IN - Roman Schindler recorded a goal and an assist and Brandon Barnes made eight saves leading Bradley (1-1-0) to a 2-1 victory against in-state rival Northern Illinois (1-1-0) in the opening game of ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic Saturday evening at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

The Braves jumped on NIU from the opening kickoff and generated a corner kick on the first possession, though the resulting shot by Frank Bak sailed wide.

After near misses by both teams in the opening 20 minutes, Bradley got the scoring started in the 22nd minute when senior forward Richard Olson sprang first-year sophomore Roman Schindler with a through ball.  Huskies keeper Ethan Pitre came off his line to challenge Schindler, but the skillful European dribbled around the keeper to score the empty-netter at 21:38 for his second tally in as many games to start his Bradley career.

Schindler continued to make his presence felt in the 32nd minute when he found freshman Younes Dayekh, who converted for his first career goal and a 2-0 Bradley lead at 31:52.

Northern Illinois cut into the lead in the 51st minute, when Alex Welch converted a penalty kick at 50:50.  The PK was created when the Braves were whistled for a foul in the box during NIU's fifth corner kick of the match.

In a back-and-forth affair, Northern Illinois kept the pressure on until the final whistle, finishing with the match's final three shots.  Sheridan Smith missed wide on his header off a corner kick service in the 8th minute, Ethan Pitre shot high in the 88th minute and after a Bradley foul in the 89th minute, Barnes saved NIU's final attempt by Noah Brodie in the 90th minute.  In his second match for Bradley as a graduate transfer from Seton Hall, Barnes posted a career-best eight saves to earn the win.

The series against the Huskies dates back to Bradley's first season as a NCAA Division I program in 1987.  Though Northern Illinois maintains a 9-7-3 lead in the 19 series meetings, Bradley now boasts a 7-2-2 record in the last 11 meetings against the Huskies since earning its first-ever series win in 1997.

Bradley, which is playing in the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic for the second consecutive year and the sixth time overall (6-4-1), will conclude its 2017 participation in the event Monday when the Braves face Milwaukee in a noon match at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
