Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Kathryn Graf had a career-high 16 kills and hit at a .452 clip, but Southern Illinois slowed down the Bradley offense with 13 blocks and 89 digs to top the Braves 27-29, 25-17, 25-16, 25-22 Friday at Renaissance Coliseum in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both squads.

Graf tallied a match-high 16 kills in the setback for the Braves, who dropped to 7-8 overall and 0-1 in MVC play.  Senior Erica Haslag joined Graf in double figures with 14 kills and 18 digs as she turned in her eighth double-double of the year.  Sophomore Hannah Angeli had a double-double of her own, her team-best 11th of the season, with 38 assists and a team-best 21 digs.

Bradley jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and led for most of the stanza.  Trailing 22-20, SIU rattled off four consecutive points to hold set point at 24-22.  Graf answered with three consecutive kills to give Bradley set point at 25-24, but back-to-back errors gave SIU set point again at 26-25.  Junior Allison Turner tied it at 26-26 with a kill, only to have the Salukis grab a 27-26 lead on an Andrea Estrada kill.

Back-to-back SIU attack errors gave the Braves set point (28-27) and senior Jamie Livaudais and freshman Ezri Edwards combined for a block as Bradley took the opener 29-27.  Graf had seven of her match-high 16 kills in the first set to lead Bradley offensively as she notched seven of the team's 12 kills in the opener.

The Braves battled back from an early four-point deficit in the second set to pull even midway through at 15-15 on a Livaudais kill.  A Southern Illinois kill and ace put the Salukis back in front 17-15, however, and SIU followed a Turner kill with a 5-0 run to build a 22-16 advantage.  Southern Illinois went on to pull even in the match at one set each with a 25-17 second-set victory.

SIU hit .314 in the third set and also tallied four blocks, while limiting Bradley to a .114 attack percentage in the frame.  A four-point Saluki spurt broke open a one-point contest as Southern Illinois built a 14-9 lead.  SIU never let the Braves cut the deficit under four down the stretch and went on to claim the third set 25-16.

Bradley led for a good portion of the third set, but had to rally to tie the score at 21-21 on a Haslag kill.  Kolby Meeks broke the tie with a kill on an overpass and Ashley Edelen forced a BU timeout with an ace as SIU grabbed a 23-21 lead.  Sarah Shaw found floor with a kill to pull Bradley within one at 23-22, but Estrada answered with a kill of her own as the Salukis held match point at 24-22.  A Bradley attack error closed out a 25-22 SIU win and the match as the Salukis snapped a four-match win streak for the Braves.

Patience Brown led Southern Illinois with 14 kills to pace three SIU players in double figures in kills.  Estrada added 11 kills, 21 digs and four blocks, while Maggie Nedoma had 10 kills.

Bradley closes out a 10-match home stand Saturday with a 7 p.m. match against pre-season MVC favorite Missouri State.  Head coach Carol Price-Torok will deliver a pre-match "Chalk Talk" open to all fans at 6:25 p.m. in the Zobrist Room.
