Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior Erica Haslag collected 15 kills and sophomore Kathryn Graf added nine of her own while attacking at a .615 clip as the duo helped power Bradley to a 25-16, 25-22, 25-16 victory over defending Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion Murray State Friday to wrap up day one of the 2017 CEFCU Classic.

The Braves hit a season-best .323 in the sweep of Murray State with sophomore setter Hannah Angeli collecting 32 assists, two aces, nine digs and six kills.  Bradley (3-6 overall) outblocked the Racers (6-2 overall) 10 to five and held Murray State to .084 hitting as the Braves snapped MSU's six-match win streak with the win.

Bradley led from wire to wire in the first set, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage to start the contest and led 15-11 midway through the opening frame.  Haslag, Angeli and Graf each had kills to extend the lead to 18-11 and open a 6-2 push by the Braves which pushed the lead to eight at 21-13.  Haslag and Angeli each added one more kill during the Bradley run.  A Murray State attack error gave the Braves set point at 24-16 and the combination of Haslag and freshman Ezri Edwards, who made her first career start, combined for a block to cap Bradley's 25-16 opening set victory.

The second set was close throughout and the Braves had to battle back after falling behind by as many four points at 16-12.  Graf had a pair of kills and a block to spark a 5-0 BU run which put Bradley in front 17-16.  The score was knotted at 21-21, when Sarah Shaw found the floor with a kill to give the Braves a 22-21 edge.  Edwards and Angeli combined for a block to give Bradley a two-point cushion at 23-21.  After a Bradley error cut the lead to one (23-22), back-to-back Murray State errors closed out a 25-22 win for the Braves.

The Missouri Valley Conference leader in kills per set entering the contest, Haslag had a fairly quiet first two sets with three kills in each of the first two frames.  That was different story in the third set, however, as she tallied nine of her match-high 15 kills and helped the Braves hit .419 in the set.

Murray State led 7-6 in the third before a Racer attack error was the catalyst for an 8-1 Bradley run.  Haslag followed with back-to-back kills and Graf added a kill and block to give the Braves an 11-7 lead.  The teams traded errors before Haslag again had back-to-back kills as Bradley extended the advantage to 14-8.  Murray State pulled with four at 14-10, but Bradley held the Racers off to complete the sweep with a 25-16 third-set win.

Haslag hit .324 on the night and had a match-high 15 kills.  Angeli finished one dig short of her eighth double-double of the year with six kills, 32 assists, two aces, nine digs and a pair of blocks.  Graf added nine kills with one error on 13 swings.  Junior Yavianliz Rosado helped slow down Murray State's offensive attack with a match-high 18 digs and helped Bradley to a 55-41 advantage in digs.

Earlier in the day, Illinois-Chicago edged the Braves in five sets to open the CEFCU Classic.

The 2017 CEFCU Classic concludes Saturday with a pair of matches at Renaissance Coliseum.  Murray State faces Illinois-Chicago at 11 a.m. to open the day and Bradley will have a rematch with the Flames later in the day at 5 p.m.
