Elena Danielson of the Bradley women's cross country/track and field teams is one of four student-athletes named a 2017 Missouri Valley postgraduate scholarship winner, announced by Commissioner Doug Elgin on Friday.

The Missouri Valley Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee votes to award postgraduate scholarships to four student-athletes, due to their exemplary academic and athletic performances. Each receives a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship from the conference.

Danielson, a native of St. Cloud, Minnesota, helped the Braves to a top-two finish at the MVC Cross Country Championship for the fourth-straight season, placing 18th. She ran the 3,000m and 5,000m events during the indoor season, posting a career-best time of 17:42.62 in the 5,000m at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor meet.

Off the track, Danielson earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors in cross country and was Bradley's designee for the State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award. She's a three-time recipient of the league's Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award and a President's Council Academic Award honoree and holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average while majoring in cell and molecular biology.  She is a two-year member of the Beta Beta Beta national biological honor society and received a District research grant from the organization in 2016.  She plans to attend medical school at the University of North Dakota.

To be eligible for consideration, recipients must have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40, participated with distinction in a Missouri Valley Conference championship sport for at least two seasons at the nominating institution and must graduate from their institutions within 18 months following selection at the spring meetings of the Faculty Athletics Representative Committee.

The recipients must also be accepted for postgraduate studies at an institution of higher learning at the time of receipt of the scholarship and, the recipients must have completed eligibility for participation in intercollegiate athletics in the academic year in which nominated.

Danielson is the 10th Brave to receive the scholarship from the conference and the first since 2010 when Jenny Van Kirk of women's basketball collected the honor.
