Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- After advancing to the championship game through a penalty kick shootout the last two years, Bradley (10-6-3) came up on the short end of a shootout after playing #3 SMU (14-3-1) to a 1-1 draw in the first semifinal of the 2004 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Friday night at Morrison Stadium.
SMU goalkeeper T.J. Tomasso stopped Kevin Erickson's shot to the left post in the third round and the Mustangs converted all five of their attempts for a 5-3 edge in the shootout.
Bradley grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when senior forward Preston Good (Newark, Calif./Moreau Catholic H.S.) beat Tomasso in a one-on-one situation from 15 yards out. Good's seventh goal of the season was set up when the Mustangs were unable to get a strong clearance. Defender Will Shelton intercepted the ball near the center circle and played it forward to Erickson, who led Good into the penalty area with one touch.
Despite an 11-2 edge in first-half shots for the Mustangs, Dunsheath kept the Mustangs off the board by making five first-period saves. Dunsheath continued his stellar play all night, finishing with nine total saves, including a pair of diving stops on free kicks at the end of regulation and the second overtime.
After Bradley was denied two potential penalty kicks in the first half, SMU got the nod in the 69th minute when Chris Brown knocked Ryan Lathan down during a Mustang rush through the left side of the area. Mynor Gonzalez buried the attempt with a low shot inside the left post to knot the score, 1-1.
Friday's result likely ended Bradley's season, as well as the careers of seniors Good, Cody Kother and Luke Kreamalmeyer. The NCAA will announce the field for the 48-team national championship tournament Monday afternoon.
NOTES: Friday's shootout was Bradley's fourth in its last five MVC Tournament Final Four games. After playing the Mustangs to a 0-0 draw in the 2002 semifinal, Bradley was credited with a victory by winning the penalty kick shootout, 3-1. Last season, Bradley and Southwest Missouri State finished the semifinals with a 1-1 draw, before Bradley advanced through the shootout, only to lose to SMU on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the championship game.
Since Friday's result officially goes down as a draw, Bradley technically remains unbeaten in its last 20 overtime games, dating back to a four-overtime loss to Creighton in the 2000 MVC Tournament final. Dunsheath is now 4-0-11 in 15 career overtime games.
By scoring his goal in the 24th minute, Good ended his career by scoring at least one point in each of his final eight games, the second-longest streak in Bradley Soccer history.
SMU will leave the Valley for Conference USA next season. The all-time series between the Braves and Mustangs now stands at 4-3-3, including an even 3-3-3 during SMU's five seasons in the league.
