Braves Down Stony Brook 87-60 In Season Opener

PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Dena Williams hit four consecutive baskets in the first half, keying an 18-0 first half Bradley run as the Bradley women's basketball team cruised to an 87-60 season-opening victory against Stony Brook Sunday at Robertson Memorial Field House.

Bradley trailed 8-6 in the early going, before the Braves pressure defense and Williams presence in the middle helped keep the Seawolves scoreless for the next 7:18 of the first half as Bradley went on an 18-0 to take a 24-8 lead with 9:59 left in the half. Williams had eight points, four rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal to highlight the Braves run.

Stony Brook was unable to cut the lead under nine points as Bradley built a 46-25 halftime lead as Williams had 19 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in the first half. The Braves held the Seawolves to 29 percent shooting in the first half and forced 17 Stony Brook turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action.

The Braves forced 29 Stony Brook turnovers and owned a 36-10 edge in points off turnovers in the contest. Williams finished with game highs of 21 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, while hitting 9-of-14 shots in just 18 minutes of action. Her 11 rebound effort moved her into ninth on Bradley's career rebounding list, passing former teammate Sara Bailey.

Senior Genny Mueller hit 3-of-6 three-pointers and scored 14 points en route to passing Jennifer Jolley for 13th on Bradley's career scoring list. Junior Molly Hartke added a career-high 15 points off the bench in 15 minutes of play as she also nailed 3-of-6 three-point attempts.

Sophomore guard Jen Brown dished out a career-high 10 assists and had just three turnovers while playing only 18 minutes.

The Braves extended the lead to as many as 36 points in the second half as all 15 Bradley players saw at least four minutes of playing time. Mueller was the only Bradley player to play more than 19 minutes, totalling 25 minutes.

Freshman Devyn Flanagan had a solid debut for the Braves, playing point guard most of the second half and finishing with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting and three assists. Sophomore Ashley Chelleen also made her return to the lineup, posting two assists, one rebound and one blocked shot in four minutes.

Stony Brook had three players score in double figures, led by Inbar Orion's 12 points. Mykeema Ford added 10 points and nine assists, while Jessie Boylan chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Bradley returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 24 at Illinois-Chicago at 7:05 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion.
