Senior Genny Mueller scored 26 points and sophomore guard Jen Brown added a career-high 15 points, but the Bradley women's basketball team couldn't compete with 10th-ranked Ohio State's size as the Buckeyes outscored the Braves 45-20 in the second half to down Bradley 86-52 in the championship game of the Wonder/Hostess Buckeye Classic Sunday.
Mueller, who earned all-tournament honors, hit 6-of-10 three-pointers and 8-of-11 free throw attempts to score a season-high 26 points. Brown hit 6-of-8 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range as the duo combined for 41 of Bradley's 52 points.
Bradley (3-1 overall) tied the score 20-20 on a three-pointer by Genny Mueller with 10:13 left in the first half. Ohio State's defense tightened, however, as the Braves went scoreless for the next 4:41 as the Buckeyes used an 8-0 run to take a 28-20 lead. Bradley couldn't cut any further into the deficit and trailed 41-32 at the half.
The Braves fired from long range to stay in the game in the first half, hitting 8-of-10 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes. Ohio State had surrendered just eight three-pointers in their first five games of the season, but senior Genny Mueller connected on 5-of-7 trey's to post 17 first-half points.
The Buckeyes did their damage on the inside in the first half as last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year scored 17 points in the first half to help the Buckeyes to a 28-4 advantage in points in the paint in the opening half .
First half foul trouble limited senior Dena Williams to just nine minutes in the first half after picking up her third foul with 3:36 before the break.
Sophomore Jen Brown pulled Bradley to within eight points at 43-35 with the Braves ninth three-pointer of the game with 19:20 to play. Bradley went cold from the field after that, however, as the Braves made just one field goal in the next 7:13 of play during a 19-2 Buckeye run.
Bradley never got back in the game as the Buckeyes continued to pound the ball inside and finished the game with a 50-8 advantage in points in the paint.
Ohio State had limited opponents to 18 percent shooting from three-point range coming into the game, but Bradley connected on 10-of-16 three-point shots in the game, making 62.5 percent.
Turnovers also proved costly as Ohio State held a 14-22 edge in turnovers which helped the Buckeyes post a 25-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Ohio State is the highest ranked opponent for the Braves and the first since facing 13th ranked SMS on Feb. 16, 2001.
Bradley returns to action Wednesday when the Braves play host to Western Illinois at 7 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House.
