Box Score PEORIA, Ill. ? Bradley senior forward Preston Good (Newark, Calif./Moreau Catholic H.S.) scored the sixth-fastest goal to start a game in school history and the new-look defense did the rest as Braves opened the 2004 season with a 1-0 victory versus Providence in the nightcap of the Bradley Classic Friday night at Shea Stadium.
In the tournament opener, Bradley's Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake cruised to a 5-0 victory versus defending Atlantic 10 Conference co-champion Richmond, behind a goal and assist from Matt Nickel and a pair of second-half goals from Jess Richey.
In Friday's nightcap, Good connected for his 25th career goal just 1:16 into the game by finishing off a corner kick play. The Braves began the scoring play with a short corner from the right side. Freshman midfielder Drew DeGurian (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) headed the service into the middle of the box, where junior Nick Bowden (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way H.S.) fought through traffic to send another header to the right post. Good slammed home the loose ball with a side volley for the game's lone score.
Although Bradley could not find the back of the net again, it was not for a lack of trying. The Braves fired off 19 shots and put 11 of those shots on goal. Providence keeper Jeff Newman came through with several spectacular saves among his seven stops and he was aided by three team saves, including one on a header by Kevin Erickson (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek H.S.) that was sure to find the nettting inside the right post.
Conversely, Bradley's All-American candidate between the pipes, junior Chris Dunsheath (Rockford, Ill./Boylan H.S.) needed to make only two fairly simple saves to up his career shutout total to 12.5. For the game, Bradley outshot Providence 19-9 and owned a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks. Although Bradley started three new players in its back line following the 2003 graduation of defensive stalwarts Ryan Glynn, Ryan Halcrow and Shannon Taylor, the Braves allowed Providence just the two shots on goal.
The second annual Bradley Classic will conclude with two more games Saturday night: Drake versus Providence at 5 p.m. and Bradley versus Richmond at 7:30. Friday's crowd of 1,620 was the fourth-largest home crowd in Bradley Soccer history. Meanwhile, Drake's 5-0 victory versus Richmond set the young tournament's records for goals in a game and victory margin. Richey tied the tournament record with his two goals and four points in a Bradley Classic game
