Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Five Bradley players scored in double figures, paced by sophomore Ashley Chelleen's season-high 17 points, but Indiana State used a late run to pull out an 81-74 victory over the Bradley women's basketball team Sunday at Robertson Memorial Field House.
For the second consecutive game the Braves managed to keep the game close despite senior Dena Williams battling foul trouble the entire afternoon. Williams picked up two fouls in the first 1:51 of play and saw just four minutes in the first half. Chelleen helped make up for Williams absence in the paint by hitting her first four shots from the field and scoring nine points in the first half. The Braves shot 38.7 percent in the first half and committed just eight turnovers as the Sycamores held a 32-31 lead at the break.
The second half featured six lead changes and the game was tied a total of six times as the teams battled back and forth. Bradley led by as many as six points in the second half, when sophomore Jen Brown made a layup with 9:54 to play to give the Braves a 60-54 advantage.
The Braves (11-5 overall, 4-3 MVC) held a five-point lead after Chelleen made a layup with 6:55 to play to give Bradley a 65-60 lead. A three-point play by Indiana State's Rachel Maenpaa and jumper by Melanie Boeglin knotted the score at 65 with 6:03 remaining.
After taking the press off for parts of the second half, the Sycamores again applied pressure to the Braves in the closing minutes of the second half. The Braves committed six turnovers and went 1-for-4 from the field on the next 12 possessions as Indiana State went on an 21-9 run over the final 6:50 of the game, keyed by eight points from Boeglin.
With Bradley trailing 73-69 after a Lisa Verhoff three-pointer pushed Indiana State's lead to four points, both teams struggled offensively as neither team scored during the next 2:34 before Boeglin extended the Sycamores lead to six points with a pair of free throws at 1:35.
Sophomore Alex Liberatore cut the Sycamores lead to four points with a pair of free throws with 1:14 remaining, but Indiana State made all six of its free throw attempts in final 20 seconds of play to hold on for the win.
Chelleen had a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, as she had her highest point total since scoring 17 at Southern Illinois on February, 27, 2003. Sophomore Jen Brown had her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 assists. Freshman Devyn Flanagan had a season-best 13 points, hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers and sophomore Alex Liberatore tied a career-high with 10 points, helping the Bradley reserves score 44 of the Braves 74 points.
Senior Genny Mueller made three of her final four three-point attempts to tie Michelle Nason's Bradley career record with 158 trey's. Mueller finished with 11 points, two assists and two steals. Williams finished with seven points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
Bradley shot 47.4 percent from the field and made 7-of-14 free throw attempts. The Braves shot 57.7 percent in the second half, including 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from beyond the arc, but Indiana State made 22-of-26 second-half free throw attempts and forced 12 second-half Bradley turnovers. The Braves had five individuals score in double figures for the first time since March 13, 2003 in a 72-62 loss to Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa.
Boeglin paced Indiana State with 23 points and seven steals as she made 6-of-10 shots from the field and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. The Sycamores shot 50 percent from the field and made 32-of-37 free throw attempts (86.5 percent). The 32 made free throws is the second highest total in Robertson Field House history, surpassed only by the Braves 38 makes against Marquette on Dec. 7, 1987.
Bradley opens a three-game Valley road swing Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Drake.
