Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa ? Bradley committed a season-low 11 turnovers, but Drake's transition game and solid free throw shooting helped the Bulldogs hold off the Braves, 81-74 in Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball action Thursday.
Drake held a 19-2 advantage in fast break points and made 27-of-34 free throw attempts in the game as the Bulldogs improved to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in Valley play with the victory. Bradley fell to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in league play, losing for the 12th consecutive time against Drake in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Braves trailed 37-33 at the half after making 5-of-8 three-point attempts during the opening period, but just 8-of-24 shots inside the arc. Senior Genny Mueller took over sole possession of Bradley's career three-point field goals record with a trey at 18:40 in the first half, but was limited to just eight minutes in the period after picking up two fouls in the first four minutes of action.
Drake committed just two turnovers in the first half and shot 42.9 percent in the first 20 minutes. The Bulldogs capitalized on the Braves six turnovers in the first half and owned a 15-0 edge in fast break points and 9-3 advantage in points off turnovers at the break.
The Braves trailed 43-41 after a 16-foot jumper from sophomore Erika Nelson, but Bradley failed to score for the next 3:30 as Drake used a 10-0 run to take a 53-43 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining.
Drake held a 57-45 lead, when Bradley went on a 10-2 spurt that pulled the Braves to within four points at 59-55 with 8:00 to play. Senior Dena Williams hit three field goals in a span of 1:26 to help key the BU run.
The Bulldogs scored nine consecutive points during the next 3:40, as Bradley missed its next seven shots from the field, to once again push their lead to double digits at 68-55 with 5:55 left in the game. Drake scored its final 12 points from the line, hitting 14-of-18 free throw attempts in the final 5:55 of play to hold off any attempts at a Bradley rally.
Williams scored 16 of her team-high 22 points in the final 9:30 of the game, scoring 18 points in the second half. After a 2-for-6 start in the first half for Williams, she made 8-of-12 shots in the second half to finish with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists and four blocked shots. Williams moved into third place in Valley history passing Carla Bennett and Leslie Ferrell for third place on the Valley's career blocked shots list.
Fellow senior Amy Fuller had 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, while senior Genny Mueller was also in double figures with 12 points. Mueller moved into ninth place all-time in scoring at Bradley, passing Eileen Yerkes and now has 1,126 career points.
Sophomore Jen Brown tied a career-high with seven rebounds and dished out eight assists with just one turnover.
Drake was paced by 25 points from Linda Sayavongchanh. Jill Martin and Brandy Dahir both had double-doubles as Dahir had 20 points and 10 boards, while Martin finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Bradley returns to action Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Creighton at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
