Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Four Bradley players scored in double figures, paced by senior Dena Williams team-high 15 points, as the Bradley women's cruised to an 81-67 victory over visiting Evansville Thursday night at Robertson Memorial Field House in Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball action.
Freshman Devyn Flanagan and senior Genny Mueller helped the Braves seize control of the contest midway through the first half, when the duo combined for 13 points during a 24-0 Bradley run. The Braves held a 13-9 lead with 11:55 to play in the first half, when Flanagan knocked down a three-pointer to start a 24-0 Bradley run.
Williams made a jumper in the lane and Flanagan followed with back-to-back baskets as she scored seven of the Braves first nine points during the decisive spurt. Mueller hit consecutive three-pointers and senior Jaime Lugge added a layup the helped Bradley take a 37-9 lead with just over five minutes left before the break.
Evansville went 0-for-11 from the field with two turnovers during the run. Bradley went into the locker room with a 45-22 lead at the half.
The Braves committed 12 second-half turnovers as the Purple Aces attempted to stage a comeback. Bradley led 65-39 with 8:57 to play, when the Purple Aces went on a 17-2 run that cut the deficit to 67-56 with 4:35 remaining. Evansville would fail to get any closer, however, as Bradley made 9-of-12 free throw attempts in the final 2:09 to hold off the Aces for the 81-56 victory.
Flanagan finished with a 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting, while Williams posted her team-best fifth double-double of the season and 16th of her career with 15 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Williams also added three assists, four blocked shots and three steals.
Mueller hit 4-of-8 three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Sophomore Ashley Chelleen came off the bench to add 14 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots in 19 minutes.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Braves, who improved to 12-8 overall and 5-6 in Valley play. The Braves shot 51.5 percent in the first half and finished shooting 45.9 percent from the field for the game. The Braves dominated the glass, hauling outrebounding Evansville (46-32) and pulled down an impressive 18 offensive boards.
Evansville (14-7 overall, 7-5 MVC) was led by 17 points from Jennifer Utterback. Megan Liffick was also in double figures with 13 points for the Purple Aces.
Bradley returns to action Saturday at 2:05 p.m. against Southern Illinois at Robertson Memorial Field House. Saturday's game will be the annual “Hoops for Cure” event as the Braves will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
