PEORIA, Ill. ? Bradley closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 4-3 victory over visiting Saint Louis when sophomore Teri Chan sealed the victory with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory at #4 singles at the Markin Tennis Courts Wednesday. The match lasted just over four hours as the two teams took the court shortly after 5 p.m. and concluded a few minutes past 9 p.m.
Saint Louis had five players in uniform and conceded the point at #6 singles to start the match. Sophomore Elise Montrose and junior Ashley Morris gave the Braves an early 2-0 lead when they posted an 8-3 victory over Katie Lozanova and Tara Grant at #1 doubles to give Bradley the doubles point. The Billikens' duo of Amanda Hellberg and Rachel McCullagh were 8-3 winner at #2 doubles over Bradley's duo of Chan and senior Kelley Wood.
Saint Louis took three of the five singles matches, however, before Chan posted her victory at #4 singles to pull even with the Braves at 3-3. Hellberg defeated Montrose at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Tina Grasso also won in straight sets at #5 singles against Bradley's Katie Bowen.
Morris posted a 7-6 (4) win in the first set at #2 singles, before picking up the win after Lozanova was forced to retire due to injury. Playing in her final regular-season home match, Wood nearly sealed the Braves win in a three-set match at #3 singles, but Tara Grant pulled out a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wood to pull the Billikens even with the Braves at 3-3.
Chan put the finishing touches on a Bradley victory just over four hours after the match began as she posted a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over McCullagh at #4 singles. The Braves improved to 5-12 on the season with the win, while Saint Louis fell to 8-12 on the year.
Bradley returns to Missouri Valley Conference play Saturday when the Braves play at Southwest Missouri State at 10 a.m. in Springfield, Mo.
