PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Carly Sobel has been named the Missouri Valley Conference women's golfer of the week, announced Wednesday afternoon and she has also been selected as the Country Insurance & Financial Services Scholar-Athlete of the Week after helping the Bradley women's golf team to a third place finish at the Illini Spring Classic last week.
Sobel tied for fifth place at the Illini Spring Classic after shooting a 155 during the 36-hole event. The top 10 finish was the fourth of the season for Sobel and marked the sixth time in her career she placed in the top 10. She shot a 77 during Friday's opening round and fired a 78 in the second round to help the Braves to a third place finish in the 11-team field. Sobel took home Valley golfer of the week honors for the second time in her career. She also earned the honor last season (2003-04) after taking second at the Illini Spring Classic. A business management and administration major, Sobel owns a 3.37 cumulative grade point average.
Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the Country Insurance & Financial Services Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.
Sobel and the Braves are back in action Sunday when they open play at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship in Springfield, Mo.
