ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Senior Brittany Mynsberge was named a repeat first-team Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete selection and sophomore Christine Cooney received honorable mention recognition according to a release by the league office Wednesday.
Mynsberge is one of five repeat first-team scholar-athlete selections and the fifth player in program history to earn first-team Valley scholar-athlete recognition twice. Bradley's career leader in home runs and putouts, she ranks fourth in school history with 106 RBI.
A health science major with a 3.59 cumulative grade point average, Mynsberge was second on the team this spring with six home runs and 25 RBI. She tied for fourth on the squad with a .247 batting average and also had seven doubles. Mynsberge earned first-team scholar-athlete honors in 2004 after breaking the MVC single season RBI record after driving in 55 runs. She ranks in Bradley's career top 10 in games played, at bats, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and putouts.
Mynsberge was a finalist for this year's Watonga Award, which is the highest honor Bradley University bestows upon a graduating senior student-athlete and recognizes the ability of the winner to combine athletic and academic success with community service.
Cooney earned honorable mention scholar-athlete recognition in her first season of eligibility after starting 40 of the 48 games she played in this spring. An accounting major with a 3.75 cumulative grade point average, Cooney hit .174 this season with 14 runs scored, four doubles and six RBI.
The criteria for the MVC scholar-athlete team parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institutions.
