HUNTLEY, Ill. – Four Braves are in the top 10 and the Bradley Women’s Golf team holds a two-shot lead on the field after one round of play Sunday a the Huskie Classic being played at the par-72 Whisper Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Ill.
Bradley had four of its five players shoot 76 or better during Sunday’s opening round, as the team finished the first 18 holes with a team score of 301. The Braves enter Monday’s final round of play with a two-shot lead over tournament-host Northern Illinois which is second at 303.
Sophomore Bari-Lynn Erais paced Bradley during Sunday’s action, carding a 74 to end the day alone in fifth place, two shots behind the individual leader. Junior Rikki Sobel is one shot behind Erais in a tie for sixth place after firing a season-best 75 in the first round.
Senior Charlotte McGinnis and junior Whitney Cox are both tied for ninth place overall at 76 after 18 holes of play to round out the team scoring for the Braves.
Despite the two-shot lead heading into Monday’s final round, the Braves will have their hands full in their attempt to claim their second consecutive tournament title to open the 2006-07 season. Sobel, who ranked third on the team last year with a 79.7 stroke average, will miss Monday’s final round of play in observance of Yom Kippur.
The Braves enter Monday’s action with a four-shot edge on Southern Illinois which is third at 305. Eastern Illinois is fourth at 313, while Western Illinois is in fifth place at 317. Detroit is three shots behind the Westerwinds in sixth place at 320 and North Dakota State is seventh at 321. Northern Colorado and Loyola finished the day tied for eighth at 323 and IPFW and Lewis are tied for 10th at 339.
