Braves Fall 92-75 To EIU In Road Opener

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Eastern Illinois used a hot shooting first half to take a double digit lead and never looked back ,defeating Bradley 92-75 in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill. Junior Devyn Flanagan led the Braves in scoring with 20 points, scoring 14 in the second half.

Sophomore Kelly Krumwiede scored all 17 of her points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting, and had pulled the Braves to within six points at 31-25 with a basket with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Eastern Illinois heated up, however, connecting on seven of its final eight shots in the closing minutes. The Panthers went on an 18-9 run to close the half and took a 49-34 lead into the locker room.

The Braves (1-1 overall) shot 46.6 percent in the first half, but Eastern Illinois made 20-of-33 shots in the first 20 minutes and dominated the glass, holding a 20-10 edge in rebounding at the break.

Bradley struggled offensively in the second half, making just 2-of-10 shots to open the period. The Panthers capitalized on the Braves cold shooting, using a 10-1 run to build a 26-point lead at 71-45 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Braves cut the Eastern Illinois lead to 16 points with just over two minutes remaining, but time was on Bradley's side as the Panthers picked up a 92-75 victory in their season opener.

Flanagan led the Braves in scoring with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting, scoring 14 in the second half. She also added three assists and three steals in 35 minutes. Krumwiede scored 17 points in the first half, but was held scoreless and limited to just five minutes in the second half due to foul trouble.

Senior Jen Brown had eight points and a team-high four assists to move into fourth place on the Braves career assist list. She passed Dawn Cartwright (1992-96), who dished out 353 assists as a Brave, for fourth place and now has 356 assists, needing just five assists to pass Andrea McAllister for third place in program history.

Fellow senior Ashley Chelleen chipped in with six points, four rebounds and three blocked shots off the bench. She moved up two spots on Bradley's career scoring list into 29th place, passing Sheila Jenkins (638 points) and Dana Anderson (641). Chelleen has 643 career points and needs three points to pass former teammate Va'Nicia Waterman who ranks 28th in Bradley history with 645 points. Chelleen also moved into a three-way tie for seventh in school history in blocked shots, pushing her career total to 51. She is tied with Sara Bailey and Lynn Pastucha for seventh all-time.

Eastern Illinois (1-0 overall) cooled off in the second half, shooting 41.7 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, but hit 23-of-32 free throw attempts in the period and finished the game shooting 53.6 percent from the field. Bradley shot just 42.4 percent in the game and was outrebounded by the Panthers 41-26.

Rachel Galligan led all players, scoring 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting for Eastern Illinois. Jessica Huffman added 23 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals to help lead the Panthers, while Meggie Eck nailed four three-pointers and chipped in with 15 points.

Bradley returns to action Friday at Butler at 6:05 p.m. (CST) in Indianapolis, Ind.
