CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Senior Amy Peters scored 12 points before fouling out and junior Devyn Flanagan added 11 points but Bradley continued its recent offensive struggles, falling 47-74 at Northern Iowa Friday night at the McLeod Center in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Bradley (4-8 overall, 0-1 MVC) lost its fourth straight game and dropped its 10th consecutive Valley opener dating back to the 1996-97 season with the loss. Northern Iowa led from start to finish and held a 34-21 lead at the break, limiting the Braves to 34.5 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Panthers shot 51.7 percent in the first half and led by as many as 17 points in opening period.
Despite early foul trouble in the opening minutes of the second half, the Braves managed to keep pace with Northern Iowa, trailing by 14 points (47-33) after a Peters layup with 11:03 to play. Sarah Larsen collected three points and three assists while Tara King added five points to highlight a 16-5 UNI run that pushed the Panthers lead to 63-38 with six minutes remaining on the clock.
Northern Iowa (7-5 overall, 1-0 MVC) cruised from there as the Panthers won for the fifth straight time in the series and extended their season-long win streak to five games.
Bradley shot just 28.1 percent in the second half and finished shooting 31.1 percent for the game. The Braves struggled from long range, connecting on 2-of-14 three-point attempts (14.3 percent) and committed 24 fouls on the night. Flanagan and Peters combined for 23 of the team's 47 points and shot a combined 11-for-24, while the rest of the squad was just 8-for-37 from the field.
King led all players with 17 points and added six rebounds, while freshman Nicole Clausen matched a season-high with 12 points to lead the Panthers. Larsen added eight points, five rebounds and career-best 11 assists while committing two turnovers. Bradley forced just 12 UNI turnovers and the Panthers shot 52.8 percent from the field, including 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from beyond the three-point arc.
Bradley will continue its three-game Missouri Valley Conference road swing to open league play Saturday when the Braves play at Creighton Saturday, Jan. 6 at 3:05 p.m.
