FALLBROOK, Calif. – Junior Scott Phegley opened up the spring season with a 73 en route to a first-day two-round total of 153 as the Bradley Men’s Golf team is in 12th place in the 14-team field at the Pala Mesa Invitational at the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook, Calif.
Phegley’s first-round 73 helped the Braves card a 308 in the opening round, but the Braves fired a 316 in the second round of Monday’s action to finish the first day of play in 12th place with a team total of 624.
Bradley is five shots back of 11th place Irvine Valley College and hold a 12 shot edge on Binghamton, which is in 13th at 636. Individual places for the Braves were unavailable late Monday evening.
Phegley carded rounds of 73 and 80 to end the day with a team-best total of 153. Freshman Kyle Shay is one shot behind Phegley at 154 after firing rounds of 76 and 78, respectively. Senior Craig Tautges shot a pair of 79’s to end the first day at 158, while junior Ryan Saurs is one shot back of Tautges at 159 after shooting 81 and 78. Junior Brad Molitor rounded out the action for the Braves shooting 178 (87-91) during the first day of play.
UCLA sits atop the team standings with a two-round total of 562. CSU-San Marcos is 15 shots behind the Bruins at 577, while Arizona (3rd – 581), Oklahoma Christian (4th – 582) and San Diego State (5th – 584) round out the top five. Northeastern is in sixth place at 585, with tournament-host Drake ending the day in seventh at 593.
Loyola College (8th - 597), Western Illinois (9th - 599) and Army (10th - 602) complete the top 10. Irvine Valley College is in 11th place at 619 and five shots ahead of Bradley which is 12th at 624. Binghamton (13th – 636) and Missouri Valley Conference foe Creighton (14th – 654) round out the tournament field.
Bradley concludes play at the Pala Mesa Invitational with one round of play on Tuesday.
