Bradley held a 54-46 second-half lead before Northern Iowa used a 13-2 run to rally for a 67-64 victory over the Braves Friday night in Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball action at Robertson Memorial Field House. Bradley fell to 6-17 overall and 2-12 in Valley play with the loss.
The Braves took a 54-46 lead on a Devyn Flanagan three-pointer with just over seven minutes remaining and seemed poised to end their three-game losing streak, but UNI rallied to score 13 of the next 15 points and take a 59-56 lead with just over three minutes to play.
Tara King made two of three free throw attempts with 7:03 on the clock to start the Panthers rally. Bradley committed its first turnover of the second half with 6:51 to play and missed the front end of a one-and-one on the next two possessions before Sarah Larsen hit the first of three consecutive Northern Iowa three-pointers. Larsen connected at 6:07 to cut the BU lead to 54-51.
Flanagan made a pair of free throws with 5:47 to play, before King and Chelsey Matthias each hit three-pointers on the next two UNI possessions to give the Panthers a 57-56 lead with 4:04 remaining. Matthias hit a jumper from the right side on the next Northern Iowa possession to cap the 13-2 spurt that put the Panthers ahead 59-56 with 3:18 to go.
Flanagan answered with a three-pointer with 2:38 to play to knot the score at 59-59. Cassie Hager gave UNI a 61-59 lead with a fast-break layup with 2:10 to go, but the Braves answered at the other end with a jumper from Alex Liberatore, tying the game at 61-61 with 1:47 remaining.
Jessie Biggs jumper with 1:18 on the clock put UNI ahead 63-61 and Matthias came away with a steal on the Braves ensuing possession with 56 seconds to play. Hager pulled down an offensive rebound on a UNI miss with 30 seconds left, forcing the Braves to foul. Sarah Larsen made a pair of free throws with 18.7 seconds on the clock to extend the UNI lead to 56-61.
Jen Brown raced down to the other end and knocked down a three-pointer with 12.2 seconds to cut the deficit to one point at 65-64. Larsen made another pair of free throws with 8.9 seconds to play to put UNI up 67-64. Flanagan's three-point attempt in the closing seconds rimmed out as Bradley fell to 0-5 in games decided by three points or less.
Flanagan led the Braves with 17 points, while Liberatore added a career-best 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Sophomore Libby Magnuson was also in double figures for the second consecutive game with 10 points. Junior Ashley Chelleen contributed eight points, seven rebounds and team-best three steals off the bench.
Bradley committed a season-low seven turnovers and made 6-of-13 three-point attempts (46.2 percent). The Braves forced 10 first-half turnovers, but Northern Iowa committed just five turnovers in the second half and made 11-of-12 free throw attempts in the final 20 minutes of play.
Northern Iowa (16-7 overall, 10-4 MVC) had three players reach double figures. Larsen finished with a game-high 19 points, while King added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Hager finished with 15 points, seven boards and five blocked shots.
Bradley continues its three-game homestand next Friday when the Braves play host to Wichita State at 7:05 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House.
