PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley trailed most of the second half, but closed the game outscoring Wichita State 14-6 in the final 3:31 of play to pull out an 85-79 victory against the Shockers Friday night in Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball action at Robertson Memorial Field House.
The two teams battled back and forth in the first half with the lead changing hands a total of seven times in the first 20 minutes of action. Wichita State held a 41-39 lead at the half and led by as many as six points in the second half on a Lexee McDonnell three-pointer with 7:20 to play.
The Braves used an 8-2 spurt capped by a Devyn Flanagan runner in the lane with 4:14 to play to tie the game at 71-71. The Shockers went back on top on a layup by Daria Frazier off her own miss with 3:41 to go, as Wichita State took a 73-71 lead. Junior Amy Peters gave Bradley its first lead of the second half with a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3:31 to go, putting the Braves ahead 74-73.
Junior Ashley Chelleen split a pair of free throws with 2:31 to play and freshman Vanessa Ostergaard hit a jumper with 2:10 remaining to extend the Braves lead to 77-73. Bradley got a defensive stop and Chelleen made a pair of free throws with 1:44 on the clock to push the Braves advantage to six points 79-73.
Lexee McDonnell made a layup on a Shocker miss at the other end to pull Wichita State to within 79-75 with 1:29 to go, but the Shockers would get no closer. Wichita State was forced to foul in the closing seconds and the Braves made six of six free throw attempts in the final 37 seconds of play to seal the victory.
Bradley (7-17 overall, 3-12 MVC) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory. The Braves 85 points were a season-best and the most since Bradley netted 86 points in an 86-56 victory at Saint Louis on Dec. 21, 2004. Peters tied for game-high scoring honors with 19 points, while Chelleen added her first double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Devyn Flanagan chipped in with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting off the bench and Ostergaard played 16 minutes in the second half, scoring a season-high 11 points.
Wichita State (14-11 overall, 7-9 MVC) had a strong inside game, scoring 58 of its 79 points in the paint. The Shockers struggled from long range, however, hitting just 4-of-19 three-point attempts (21.1 percent). Frazier tied Peters for game-high scoring honors with 19 points. Antionette Wells also added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kiki Stephens (16 points, eight rebounds) and Lexee McDonnell (11 points) were also in double figures for Wichita State.
Bradley plays its final home game of the season Sunday when the Braves play host Missouri State at 2:05 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House. Seniors Molly Hartke and Alex Liberatore will be recognized prior to Sunday's contest.
