Five Bradley players scored in double figures, paced by
Ashley Chelleen's 14 points, and the Braves shot 50 percent from the field to help the Bradley women's basketball team to a 70-63 victory over visiting Missouri State Sunday afternoon in Missouri Valley Conference basketball action. The Braves won back-to-back games for the second time this season and improved to 8-17 overall and 4-12 in Valley play.
Missouri State scored the first six points of the second half to take a 40-34 lead and held a 44-38 advantage with 16:35 to play, before the Braves went on an 16-5 run to take a 54-49 lead with 8:47 to go. Bradley led by as many as seven points (59-52) when Ashley Chelleen completed a three-point play with 7:29 on the clock, before the Bears went on a 9-1 run to take a one point lead with 4:14 remaining.
The teams traded the lead until sophomore Libby Magnuson put the Braves ahead for good with a driving layup with 2:14 to play that gave Bradley a 64-63 lead. After a Hannah Kirk layup with 2:44 remaining had given MSU a 63-62 lead, the Bears went 0-for-4 with two turnovers on their final six possessions to allow the Braves to pull away.
Magnuson had another layup with just over 35 seconds to play to push Bradley's advantage to 66-63 and freshman Venessa Ostergaard and junior Amy Peters both made a pair of free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
Chelleen nearly posted her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds and season-high four assists. Junior Jen Brown was also close to her first double-double of the year, scoring 11 points and dishing out a game and season-high eight assists. Brown tied Heather Best for sixth on the Braves career assist list and now has 330 career assists.
The Braves had five players score in double figures for the first time five Bradley players scored or 10 or more points in an 81-74 loss to Indiana State on Jan. 23, 2005. The victory was also the first for the Braves on senior night since the 1994-95 season. Bradley won the final regular-season game of the 2003-04 season but had no seniors on the roster.
Also scoring in double figures for the Braves were junior Amy Peters with 13 points and eight rebounds. Ostergaard, who scored 36 points in the first 23 games of the season, finished with a season-best 13 points and has scored a total of 24 points in the last two contests. Magnuson also reached double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Devyn Flanagan, the Braves leading scorer, was held to just four points, but snagged a game and career-high tying 11 rebounds to help the Braves outrebound Missouri State 38-24.
Missouri State (13-13 overall, 7-10) was led by Kari Koch's game-high 20 points. Kayli Combs added 14 points as the duo both hit 4-of-7 three-pointers.
Bradley closes out the regular-season with a pair of road games, beginning Thursday with a 7:05 p.m. game against Creighton at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
