The 2006 outdoor track seasons begins on the heels of a successful indoor campaign for the Bradley Braves this weekend when they travel to Carbondale, Ill. to take part in the SIU Spring Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Sixteen athletes will compete in nine events at McAndrew Stadium (also home to Southern Illinois football) on the school's campus.
The Braves are looking to build on an exciting indoor season that saw junior thrower Jennifer Jenkins (Calumet City, Ill./Thornwood) record just the second NCAA provisional mark in Bradley history when she let go a school-record toss of 62'07.75" on her first attempt at the Missouri Valley Conference championship meet.
Jenkins is scheduled to participate in the hammer throw and the shot put events as one of two Bradley competitors in each event. Jenkins throw of 156'07" (47.73m) in last season's MVC outdoor championships is the top returning throw on the team.
Joining Jenkins among those to watch for the Braves includes junior middle-distance runner Sarah Westrick (Livonia, Mich./Winston Churchill), distance runner Ainslie Schultz (Forest City, Iowa/Forest City), sprinters Maya Monitto-Weber (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City) and Julia Schurr (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Bloom-Carroll) and six freshmen making their outdoor debuts.
Westrick is the top returning runner in the 800-meter race as well as the 1,500 where she set the standard in 2004-05 with a 4:45.40 mark at Missouri. The junior posted her best 800-meter time at the SIU Spring Classis last March, clocking in a 2:21.31 performance. Westrick is slated for runs in the 800 and 1,500-meter events at SIU.
Ainslie Schultz kicks off the spring season as the Braves' No. 1 distance runner as she holds to top returning times in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000-meter events. Schultz will get her first shot at the 5,000-meters at the classic.
Monitto-Webber returns as the top sprinter for the Braves. The junior has shown steady progress throughout the indoor season and will be aided by the addition of four freshmen sprinters. Monitto-Webber will take on the 100-meters and the 400 this weekend.
Julia Schurr is the top 400-meter runner on the Hilltop as she turns to the outdoor season after a strong indoor season. Schurr will compete as the lone Bradley entrant in the 400-meters in Carbondale.
Freshmen Nikki Greendyke (400m), Amanda Harms (100m), Jessica Holloway (Long Jump, 100m), Stefanie Luce (400/800m), Trish Martens (Triple Jump, 100m) and Jessica Puckett (100m) will make their outdoor debuts for the Braves this weekend.
