SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Bradley hit 8-of-11 three-pointers in the second half and held a 15-point lead on Missouri State, but the Bears used a 21-0 run to rally for a 69-64 victory over the Braves in the first round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Thursday night in Springfield, Mo.
Bradley (9-19 overall) scored the first seven points of the game en route to an 11-2 run to open the contest. The Braves owned a 27-19 lead following a Devyn Flanagan three-pointer with 6:07 to play in the first half, before Missouri State closed the half with an 8-0 run to pull even at 27-27 at the break.
The Braves went 0-for-5 with five turnovers to close the first half, after connecting on 11-of-18 shots from the field to open the game. Bradley outrebounded the Bears 19-9 in the first 20 minutes of play, but committed 10 turnovers compared to just one MSU turnover.
Bradley opened up the second half much like the first, hitting its first seven shots of the period during an 18-4 run that gave the Braves a 45-31 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. The Braves hit four three-pointers during the crucial run, including back-to-back three-point baskets by freshman guard Venessa Ostergaard.
Junior Jen Brown gave the Braves a 58-44 lead with 9:18 to play, but Missouri State freshman Kayli Combs hit a pair of three-pointers during a spurt in which the Bears scored 10 points in a span 1:50 span to open a 21-0 MSU run that put Missouri State ahead 65-58 with 2:18 to play. Bradley went scoreless for just over seven minutes, before Ostergaard hit her fourth three-pointer of the half with 1:53 to play to pull Bradley to within four points at 65-61.
The Bears took a 67-61 lead on a pair of Kari Koch free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining, before Devyn Flanagan made a three-pointer with 1.7 second on the clock. Koch was fouled with 0.5 seconds to play and made a pair of free throws to seal the come-from-behind victory for Missouri State.
Bradley hit 12-of-20 three-pointers and outrebounded Missouri State 33-25 for the game. The Bears committed just six turnovers and owned a 20-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Braves 12 three-pointers is the fourth best total in school history and the most since Bradley hit 13 three-pointers against Indiana State on March 6, 2004.
Four Bradley players scored in double figures with junior Amy Peters leading the way with 15 points. Flanagan added 13 points and four assists, while Ostergaard scored 12 points off the bench, hitting 4-of-4 three pointers in the second half. Junior Ashley Chelleen nearly posted a double-double finishing with 10 points and game-high nine rebounds.
Kari Koch led all players with 28 points to lead Missouri State, scoring the 2,000th point of her career in the closing seconds to seal the victory. Tahnee Balerio and Breton Wyett both added 12 points off the bench. Bradley held the Bears to 25 percent shooting from three-point (4-of-16).
