Terre Haute, Ind. ? Preseason favorite Indiana State sent the Braves to their second MVC defeat in the league-opening weekend with an impressive, 7-0, win over the visitors at the Duane Klueh Tennis Complex and Wabash Valley Tennis Club on the ISU campus.
While the league-favorite Sycamores took the team win, the Braves managed to improve upon Friday's showing by picking up a doubles win at No. 3 when sophomore Jess Sampias (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood) and freshman Eric Krubeck (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) teamed up to pull out an 8-7 (1) win over the Sycamores' Marie Caujolle and Imane Lahlou.
Unfortunately for the Braves, Indiana State had secured the doubles point and was ready to roll in singles play.
The host's momentum was too much for the Braves in singles. ISU got off to a hot start, winning No. 2 singles in shutout fashion when Joanne Schickerling improved to 11-2 on the season with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over junior Elise Montrose (Portland, Ore./Sunset).
The Sycamores quickly earned two more wins to ensure the match, then finished off the Braves with convincing straight-set wins in the balance of the singles matches.
The Braves fall to 4-7 on the season, 0-2 in the MVC and will look to regroup next weekend when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Drake Bulldogs on Friday and the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday in matches four and five of a six-game road swing.
