Braun, Krubeck Shooting For Third At MVC Individual Championships

Omaha, Neb. ? Sophomores Kim Braun (Racine, Wisc./The Prairie School) and Erin Krubeck (Boulder, Colo. /Fairview) aim for third-place finishes after the second day of action at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in Omaha, Neb.

 

Braun fell in a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Northern Iowa's Mariana Muraca. She will face Drake's Sarah Plowman for third-place in #6 singles. Krubeck took the first set from Drake's Daria Zawislak, but could not hang on as she fell in three, 1-6, 7-5, 6-0. She will face off against UNI's Samantha Schnobel for third-place in #7 singles. In #3 doubles, Krubeck and teammate Emily Regenold powered past Evansville's Cox/Elliot combo, 8-3. They will face Creighton's Yanagida/Yoneshige combo for fifth-place in #3 doubles.

 

Freshmen Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio /Princeton), Jessica Buterbaugh (Paradise Valley, Ariz./Chaparral) and Kelly Donohue (Louisville, Ky. /Sacred Heart Academy) won their back draw singles matches. All three play for fifth-place finishes in their respective flights. Regenold came back from a one set deficit to over come Creighton's Nicole Thurston 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Regenold will face Wichita State's Anna Egorova in #2 singles back draw. Buterbaugh also came back after losing the second set to take out Evansville's Stephanie Millis 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. She then dispatched Southern Illinois' Andrea Courtney 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the fifth-place finals. She will face UNI's Caroline Hannes on Sunday. Donohue powered past Creighton's Lindsey Erickson, 6-3, 6-4. She will face Illinois State's Carolyne Parent for fifth-place in #4 singles

 

Seniors Teri Chan (Gunree, Ill./Warren) and Elise Montrose (Portland, Ore. /Sunset) took their opponents to first set tie-breaks. Chan battled Wichita's Torrie Browning in #3 singles action, losing in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Chan will face Evansville's Beth Peyton for seventh-place in #3 singles. Montrose was defeated by Creighton's Katie Chiu, 6-2, 6-4. Montrose will face Drake's Veronika Lesayova for seventh-place in #1 singles on Sunday. 

 

Final action of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Individual Championship will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with doubles action followed by singles action after noon. Braun will be playing Drake's Sarah Plowman for third-place of #6 singles and Krubeck will face UNI's Samantha Schnobel for third-place in the #7 singles to highlight Sunday's scheduled matches for the Braves.
