Devyn Flanagan was one of three Bradley players in double figures, scoring a team-high 19 points to help lead the Bradley women's basketball to its first-ever victory at the Drake Knapp Center as the Braves posted a 62-57 victory over the preseason MVC favorite Drake Bulldogs Monday night. The victory snapped a five-game losing skid and ended a nine-game road losing streak for the Braves.
Bradley (5-9 overall, 1-2 MVC) never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 12 points in the first half of play. Flanagan scored 10 of her 13 first-half points in the first 11 minutes of play, helping the Braves to an 18-10 lead. Bradley held a 24-12 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the half, before Drake used a 15-4 run to pull to within one point (28-27) with 2:02 before the half.
Flanagan ended the Bulldogs run, however, converting a three-point play with 1:41 remaining and senior Jen Brown's jumper with 46 seconds on the clock gave BU a 33-27 lead at the break. Bradley held Drake to 29.2 percent shooting in the first half and the Bulldogs committed 10 turnovers in the opening half.
Drake (5-9 overall, 0-4 MVC) was held scoreless the first 6:18 of the second half as the Braves once again took a 12-point lead. Lindsay Whorton's three-pointer with 10:07 to play to cap a 9-2 Drake spurt that pulled the Bulldogs to within five points (43-38). Whorton later pulled Drake to within four points (49-45) with 5:16 to play. Flanagan hit a basket with 3:15 remaining to push Bradley's lead back to six and the Braves made eight consecutive free throws over the next 2:47 of play to put the game out of reach.
The victory ended a 15-game losing streak at the Knapp Center for the Braves and was the team's first win in Des Moines, Iowa, since Feb. 25, 1993. Bradley was 0-13 against Drake at the Knapp Center and also lost a pair of MVC Tournament games (1996 & 2003). The win also ended a five-game losing skid in the series with Drake and brought to a close a nine-game road losing streak that dated back to a win at Creighton on March 2, 2006.
Flanagan turned in another solid all-around performance, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior Jen Brown added 13 points, three rebounds, two assists (with no turnovers) and two steals. Sophomore Kelly Krumwiede notched her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and a season-best 13 rebounds.
Des Moines, Iowa, native Ashley Chelleen finished with eight points, three rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot before fouling out with 17 minutes, while senior Amy Peters, who was questionable for the game after injuring her ankle against Creighton Saturday, added four points, three rebounds and four assists in 23 minutes off the bench.
Brandy Dahir scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half, hitting 10-of-11 free throw attempts. Whorton picked up the scoring slack in the second half for the Bulldogs, tossing in 13 second-half points en route to a 16-point effort. Lauren Dybing was also in double figures for the Bulldogs with 11 points off the bench.
