OMAHA, Neb. ? Bradley senior Stephen Brust (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey H.S.) blasted home a goal in the 89th minute off a cross from freshman Rudy Garcia (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame H.S.) to give the Braves (14-5-3) their first-ever State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title with a 1-0 victory against #7 Creighton (11-2-5) Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium.
The Braves netted the game-winner in the 89th minute (88:34), as Brust scored on a blast from close range off a cross from Garcia. Garcia's cross came on a free kick just in front of the sideline to the right of Creighton goalkeeper Matt Allen. The goal was Brust's third of the season. Bradley was able to fend off the Bluejays for the remaining 86 seconds, sparking a wild celebration near midfield as the Braves secured their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament. After earning at-large invitations in 2000, 2002 and 2005, the Braves will rest easy for the next 24 hours as they await their pairing for the 2007 tournament as The Valley's automatic qualifier. The 48-team NCAA Tournament will be announced Monday between 4:30 and 5:00 p.m. Central time on ESPNews.
The Bluejays had the first scoring chance of the game in the 12th minute when their second of back-to-back corner kicks was nearly deflected into the net. Garcia headed away the deflection just in front of the goal line. The game was scoreless at the end of the first half, as Creighton outshot Bradley 9-8 in the first 45 minutes. Both teams recorded two shots on goal before the break.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Haynes (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap H.S.) turned away another excellent chance from Creighton in the 54th minute when he stopped a shot from Bluejay freshman Tucker Sindlinger directly in front of the net from close range. The hosts failed to convert on a free kick from just outside the box in the 87th minute, as the Bradley defense turned the shot away from inside the box. Haynes made five saves in the title match, collecting his second shutout of the tournament.
The Braves totaled three shots on goal throughout the match, as Creighton finished with six shots on goal. The Bluejays outshot the Braves 19-11 for the match.
Senior Teddy Anderson (Clearwater, Fla./Central Catholic H.S.) was named the tournament's most valuable player. Haynes, senior Joe Donoho (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit H.S.), and Brust were named to the all-tournament team.
