Braves Fall To Cleveland St. 82-61 At Great Alaska Shootout

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? Bradley committed a season-high 20 turnovers and was shot just 33.3 percent in an 82-61 loss to Cleveland State in the consolation game of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Braves made just 9-of-31 shots in the second half (29 percent) and committed 11 turnovers after the break as the Vikings outscored Bradley 24-8 over the final 6:32 of play and shot 60 percent from the field in the second half en route to the 82-61 victory.

 

Bradley (1-4 overall) trailed 36-28 at the break but scored the first five points of the second half to pull to within three points at 36-33.  Cleveland State (2-2 overall) held a 58-53 lead with 6:32 to play when Shawnita Garland took control of the contest. 

 

Garland scored four points to help highlight a 9-0 run that pushed the Vikings lead to 67-53 and she helped lock up the win with eight points on 2-of-2 shooting and 4-of-4 from the free throw line in addition to three rebounds, two assists and two steals over the final 6:32 of action during the decisive stretch.  The Braves were 1-for-6 from the field with two turnovers and 1-for-2 from the charity stripe over the final 3:24 of play.

 

Sophomore Jenny Van Kirk (Waconia, Minn./Waconia) was the Braves top scorer, notching a career-high with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench.  Van Kirk added five rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes of play.  Sophomore Skye Johnson (Olympia Fields, Ill./Marian Catholic) was also in double figures with 12 points to go along with two assists and three steals.  Junior Monica Rogers (Forsyth, Ill./St. Teresa/Hampton) grabbed a team-best seven rebounds, but battled double teams most of the contest and finished with six points.

 

Bradley shot 33.3 percent from the field, but finally hit its outside shots.  The Braves had made eight three-pointers in the first four games and had yet to shoot better than 29 percent from beyond the arc, but finished 7-for-21 from three-point range. 

 

The Braves struggled with the Vikings speed and passing, as Cleveland State held a 10-0 edge in fast break points and owned a 28-4 edge in points in the paint.  The Vikings dished out 26 assists, while committing 17 turnovers, and shot 55.2 percent from the field for the contest. 

 

Garland led Cleveland State with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals in 21 minutes off the bench.  Kaily Klein added 18 points and five assists.  Dominique Butler (14 points) and Brittany Korth (13 points) were also in double figures as the quartet combined for 64 points and 19 assists.

 

Bradley returns to action Tuesday when the Braves play host to Eastern Illinois at 7:05 p.m. at Robertson Memorial Field House.
