PEORIA, Ill. ? Bradley managed just five hits and failed to put a run on the board, as Wichita State swept a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader from the Braves, winning 1-0 and 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Laura Bradley Park. The Braves fell to 22-17 overall and 5-11 in Missouri Valley Conference play with the losses.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Birdsong had a strong outing in the opener, striking out eight and giving up just four hits and one unearned run. Birdsong (16-10 overall) took the loss, however, as the Braves managed just four hits off Wichita State starter Margo Pruis, who struck out 13 batters.
Despite the lack of offensive production, Bradley had plenty of scoring opportunities, drawing seven base on balls and left a total of nine runners on base. The Braves left the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings and left a pair of runners on in the fourth inning, but failed to push a run across.
Wichita State (29-25 overall, 13-7 MVC) got the only run of the first game in the top of the seventh inning. Lisa Jones reached on a Bradley error with one out in the inning and stole second. Erin Peters drew a walk and Stephanie DeLaRiva loaded the bases when she drew a base on balls. Kara L'Huillier drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field that scored Jones from third base.
Bradley's bats didn't show any signs of improvement in the second game, as Wichita State hurler Ashly Bright tied a Shocker school record with 14 strikeouts in a complete game, two-hitter.
A Bradley error in the top of the third inning led to a pair of unearned runs for Wichita State. Lindsie Mitts was on second base with one out in the inning when an error put runners at first and third with one out. Katie McGeeney, who had a nine-game hit streak snapped in the opener, moved to second on a wild pitch. Britnee Barnett knocked in both base runners with a two-out double to left center to give Wichita State at 2-0 lead.
The Braves had their best scoring opportunity of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Amanda Clack had a one-out triple to right center, but Bright struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Wichita State added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Barnett's second double of the game led off the inning and was followed by a Bright walk. Erin Peters followed a sacrifice bunt with a two-run double to left field. The Shockers scored another run later in the inning thanks in part to a Bradley error on a stolen base as Wichita State extended its lead to 5-0.
Bright struck out the final five hitters she faced in the game as she improved to 7-9 with the victory. Clack (5-4) suffered the loss for the Braves, giving up five hits and five runs (two earned), while striking out two and walking two.
Bradley will close out the three-game series against Wichita State Sunday with a single game at noon at Laura Bradley Park.
