Senior women's golfer Whitney Cox (Edmonton, Alberta/Harry Ainlay) won the Edmonton Ladies Amateur Golf Championship to become the second Bradley women's golfer to win the event. Cox blew away the field, finishing seven shots ahead of former teammate and defending Edmonton Ladies Amateur Golf Champion Charlotte McGinnis, who finished tied for second, in the event held last week at the Belvedere Golf and Country Club.
Cox set a course record with a first-round 71 and had a five-shot lead heading into the second and final round. She carded a 77 in the final round to finish at two-over par 148 and finish seven strokes ahead of McGinnis and Christie Gillespie who both tied for second at 155.
The defending Edmonton Ladies Champion, McGinnis fired a 78 in the opening round and entered the final 18 holes alone in fifth place, but matched the 77 shot by Cox to finish tied for second.
Last year McGinnis won the event with an 11-over par 155 at the Stony Plain Golf Course, while Cox was tied for third at 158. Former Bradley standout Jil Swenson, who did not participate in the 2007 event after turning pro, was in fifth at the 2006 Championship at 159.
Cox has finished in the top four in each of the last three Edmonton Ladies Championship, taking fourth in 2005 with a two-round score of 160. McGinnis was fifth in 2005 at 163, while Swenson finished sixth at 164 at the Highlands Golf Club.
