PEORIA, Ill. --
The Bradley women's golf team was one of 25 teams recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association, ranking sixth in the country and third among NCAA Division I schools with a 3.678 team grade point average, according to an announcement by the NGCA Monday. In addition, senior Charlotte McGinnis, juniors Whitney Cox and Rikki Sobel and sophomore Bari-Lynn Erais were each named NGCA All-American Scholars.
South Alabama owned the top team grade point average in the country at 3.799 and was one of four Division I teams to rank in the top 10 in the nation in team GPA. Nebraska was fifth overall at 3.705, while Bradley was right behind the Cornhuskers in sixth nationally at 3.678. The Braves ranked second in the country last year with a 3.658 GPA. A total of 13 NCAA Division I teams were listed among the NGCA's top 25, including Missouri Valley Conference member Indiana State, which was 17th overall with a 3.596 GPA.
All seven members of the 2006-07 Bradley women's golf team earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll with four individuals boasting a 3.80 GPA or better in the spring semester, including perfect 4.0 semester GPA's by McGinnis and freshman Jenny Van Kirk.
The NGCA All-American Scholar Team included a total of 368 women's collegiate golfers from Division I, II & III, with over 200 honorees coming from Division I. The criteria for selection to the team required a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the regularly schedule rounds during the year. For the second consecutive year, the Braves had four individuals selected to the team, headlined by Academic All-American Charlotte McGinnis.
The first Academic All-American in program history, McGinnis ranked third on the team with a 78.9 stroke average this past year. A 4.0 student with a double major in English and Psychology, she was named MVC Golfer of the Week after winning medalist honors at the Western Illinois Fall Invitational and helping the Braves to the team title. McGinnis earned first-team MVC scholar-athlete honors and was fourth on the team with a 13 rounds in the 70's this past season.
The third different Bradley player to earn medalist honors at the State Farm MVC Women's Golf Championship, Erais earned all-conference honors for the second consecutive year. She finished one shot short of setting a Bradley season record for stroke average, finishing the year with a 76.7 average and ranks as Bradley's career leader with a 77.7 stroke average. An accounting major with a 3.80 cumulative grade point average, Erais was a first-team MVC scholar-athlete and shot 17 of 21 rounds in the 70's and finished in the top 10 in six of nine events in 2006-07.
A Business Management and Administration major with a 3.57 grade point average, Sobel finished second to Erais at the MVC Championship and was an All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree for the second consecutive year. She was second on the squad with a 78.2 stroke average and 15 rounds in the 70's to go along with three top 10 finishes. Sobel was also a first-team MVC scholar-athlete this past season.
An accounting major with a 3.60 cumulative grade point average, Cox finished fourth on the squad with a 79.1 stroke average and tied for the team lead with six top 10 finishes. An honorable mention MVC scholar-athlete, she finished ninth at the State Farm MVC Championship this spring.
McGinnis, Cox and Erais were all repeat selections for the NGCA All-American Scholars, while Sobel earned the honor for the first time in her career.
