SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Former Bradley men's golf standout Andy Mickelson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincolnway) finished second at Monday's United States Amateur Qualifier at the Illini Country Club and was one of three individuals at the event to earn a spot in the field at the upcoming U.S. Amateur.

Mickelson shot a two-under par 69 during Monday's first round of play and fired a three-under 68 in the afternoon to finish two shots back of Clayton Parkhill, who won the event with a six-under par 135. Bradley seniors Tommie Ackerman (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian/Illinois Central) and Nick Roth (Rochester, Ill./Rochester/Illinois Central) were also in the field. Roth finished 10 shots back of the leader and eight shots behind Mickelson in a tie for 17th place at 145, turning in rounds of 72 and 73, while Ackerman carded 75 and 78 to tie for 36th at 153.

A 2003 first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, Mickelson will compete in the 107th U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., Aug. 20-26. The Olympic Club will be serving as host for the amateur championship for the third time overall and first since 1981.

Mickelson ranks as one of the Braves top golfers, finishing with a 75.2 career stroke average. He was Bradley's top golfer each of his four years and shot in the 70's or better in 90 of his 103.5 career rounds.
