PEORIA, Ill. - Bradley senior defensive midfielder Drew DeGurian added some offense to his game Saturday night, scoring twice for the first time in his career to lead the host Braves (2-0-0) to a 2-1 victory against Belmont (0-2-0) in the final game of the Holiday Inn City Centre Classic at Shea Stadium.
Both Bradley and its Missouri Valley Conference rival Eastern Illinois posted perfect 2-0 marks during the Holiday Inn City Centre Classic against Atlantic Sun members Belmont and Lipscomb. After both Valley teams recorded 2-1 wins Friday night, Eastern Illinois followed with a 2-0 win in Saturday's first game against Lipscomb to secure the tournament championship on goal differential. Brad Peters scored in the first half and Mick Galeski in the second, while Mark Hansen made three saves for the only shutout of the tournament, to lead the Panthers.
DeGurian gave the Braves a quick goal in Saturday's finale, heading home a Teddy Anderson cross from the right flank for a 1-0 Bradley lead just 5:42 into the game. Belmont drew even in the 19th minute when Ian Schinelli was able to collect a ball near the top of the box after it bounced around from several players. Schinelli worked himself free with a quick move to the right, then sent a low laser from a tough angle past Bradley keeper Mike Haynes.
Neither team was able to gain a clear advantage of possession, but the Braves did finish with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks and the last corner proved to be the difference. After freshman Ephraim Beard played the right-side corner toward the goal mouth, the ball pinged around a few times before finally falling to senior sweeper Joe Donoho at the top of the box. Donoho was able to get enough of his foot on the ball to get it into the six-yard box, where DeGurian poked a shot by Bruins keeper Ron Gravely for the game-winner at 79:56.
Belmont got off three more shots in the final 10 minutes, including a threatening effort by Erik Susewind in the 87th minute. Running in behind the Bradley defense after a Belmont back played a long ball from near midfield, Susewind was able to flick a shot out of the air toward the right post, but Haynes was able to collect the shot while falling against the post to prevent the tying score.
After successfully navigating an emotional opening weekend for its first 2-0 start since 2003, Bradley will play four of its next five games against defending conference champions. The lone exception to the run of games against league champions will be Friday's clash against North Carolina, the No. 14 seed in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, to open next weekend's Wake Forest Tournament. Following the game against the Tar Heels, Bradley will visit ACC regular-season co-champion Wake Forest Sept. 9 and Summit League champion Western Illinois Sept. 13, before hosting Big East Red Division champion Cincinnati Sept. 16 and Atlantic 10 champion Saint Louis Sept. 22.
