CHICAGO, Ill.
? After Bradley and Loyola played a scoreless first half, the host Ramblers netted three goals in a nine-minute span midway through the second half to defeat the Braves, 3-0, Saturday night at Loyola Soccer Park in Chicago, Ill. Loyola's Mark Halma scored the game-winning goal on a header in the 67th minute.
Halma's tally was his second of the season, a header past Bradley sophomore goalkeeper Drew Van Kampen (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley H.S.) off a cross from Will Martin. Halma needed only seven minutes to score his second goal of the game, another strike off a cross that gave the hosts a quick 2-0 lead. The Ramblers took advantage of a breakway when Erik Warren's cross from the right side was put home by Halma.
The Ramblers tacked on more insurance just 93 seconds later on a goal from Alex Jones. Josh Westberg provided the assist, a cross from the left side on another Loyola breakaway.
Van Kampen allowed a season-high three goals in the loss, but did make four saves to bump his season total to 36. The Ramblers outshot the Braves 19-11, but both teams put seven shots on goal. Bradley junior forward Chris Cutshaw (Carmel, Ind./Carmel H.S.) put a team-high three shots on goal. Loyola goalkeeper Brian Byrne turned aside all seven Bradley shots on goal for his sixth shutout of the season.
The Braves used 19 players in the loss. Junior defender Travis English (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills H.S.) played the full 90 minutes, the 10th time this season he's played the entire game for the Braves. Only Van Kampen has played more minutes this season.
The loss keeps Bradley's all-time win total at 199. Four of Bradley's next five matches will be at Shea Stadium. The Braves will open Missouri Valley Conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Shea Stadium against Eastern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
