EAST LANSING, Mich.
? Bradley sophomore Nicole Miller (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) bounced back after a first round qualifying singles loss to defeat Butler's Molly Casperson in an eight-game pro set, 9-8, capping the first day of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals hosted by Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.
Time constraints on the first day of play limited Miller and Casperson to an eight-game pro set in the qualifying draw consolation bracket. Miller recorded the victory by a final score of 9-8, winning the ninth point on an 11-9 tiebreaker. Miller's win puts her in the qualifying draw consolation bracket's round of 16. Earlier in the day, Miller pushed Xavier's Kara Courtney to a third set in before falling short, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the opening round of the singles qualifying draw.
Bradley freshman Veronika Wojakowska (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer H.S.) also played in the singles qualifying draw on Thursday, dropping a pair of matches. In the first round, Iowa's Ally Majercik defeated Wojakowska in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, sending Wojakowska to the consolation bracket of the qualifying draw. In the consolation bracket, Amy Recht of IPFW stopped Wojakowska, 6-4, 6-2, ending the Bradley freshman's run in the tournament.
The ITA Regionals continue Friday in East Lansing. Miller will play in singles action, while the doubles pairing of Miller and junior Emily Regenold (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton H.S.) will play in the first round of the main doubles draw against Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis of Toledo.
