PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior guard Skye Johnson (Olympia Fields, Ill./Marian Catholic) has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week announced by the league office Monday, after helping the Bradley women's basketball team to a 71-53 victory against Illinois at the United Center in Chicago.
Johnson scored 13 points and matched a career-high with nine assists to help Bradley improve to 6-1 on the year. The 2007-08 MVC Defensive Player of the Year, she also collected a career-best four blocked shots and came away with four steals to help pace the Braves' defensive efforts. Johnson had five points, two boards, five assists, three blocks and three steals in the first half, helping BU to a 40-27 lead at the break.
The MVC Player of the Week honors are the first for Johnson and she is the first Brave to earn MVC Player of the Week recognition since Jen Brown on Feb. 12, 2007. Bradley earned weekly honors from The Valley for the second consecutive week as freshman guard Michelle Lund was named MVC Newcomer of the Week last week.
Johnson and the Braves return to action Tuesday when they face Missouri at 6:30 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.
