SANTEE, Calif. --
The Bradley men's golf team finished eighth among NCAA Division I teams in the Braves spring opener at the Carlton Oaks Invitational played Monday and Tuesday at the par-72, 7,044-yard Carlton Oaks Country Club. Sophomore Zach Wanken (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) was Bradley's top finisher, tying for 26th place.
Wanken carded the low round of the day for the Braves, with a final round 76 and finished the 54-hole event with a score of 233 to tie for 26th overall. Freshman Coby Thompson (East Galesburg, Ill./Knoxville) finished one shot behind Wanken in a tie for 29th place at 234, turning his best round of the tournament with a third-round 77.
Freshman Nathan Perry (Normal, Ill./Normal West) matched his first round score of 80 in the final round to finish alone in 37th at 236. Senior Tommie Ackerman (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian/Illinois Central) shot 90 during Tuesday's action to finish at 254 and tie for 61st. Fellow senior Nick Roth (Rochester, Ill./Rochester/Illinois Central), withdrew from Monday's play because of the flu, but returned to the course on Tuesday to shoot a final round 91 to round out the scoring for Bradley.
The Braves shot a 323 in the final round to finish eighth among NCAA Division I teams at 957. Tournament-host Drake was the top finisher among Division I schools with a three-round total of 915. Utah Valley State finished five shots behind the Bulldogs at 920 and was followed by Loyola College (Md.) at 922.
Western Illinois finished fourth among Division I schools at 933. Army was six shots behind the Leathernecks at 939. Loyola-Chicago took sixth at 945, with North Dakota State (952) and Bradley (957) rounding out the field.
The Braves return to action March 3-4 at the Grover Page Classic in Jackson, Tenn.
